  It is exceptionally rare to happen upon a new Burgundy domaine that is both set for greatness and firmly under the radar in equal measure. Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot (CLF) is such a property, however given they enjoy an enviable collection of six Grand Cru vineyards, and the exceptional winemaking skills shown by the talented Thomas Colladot, CLF won't remain hidden for long. For many years the grapes from the property were sold to negociants, however as these contracts begun to expire in the early 2000's they started taking back the production, and brought on Thomas Colladot in 2010 to oversee winemaking duties.

  While not certified, organic practices are used in the vineyards, with all fruit hand harvested and whole cluster fermentation used where and as desired depending on the plot and vintage conditions. New oak varies between 30-50% for most wines, and élevage lasts between 15 and 18 months, before bottling is conducted in-house.   Ripe and attractively fresh aromas include those of black cherry coulis, spice and violet. The very rich and generously proportioned medium weight flavors possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the textured and lingering finish where the supporting tannins are a bit raspy.   The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village, whose malolactic finished at the beginning of September, matured in 25-30% new oak, has a much more defined and fresher nose than the Bourgogne Rouge with lively black cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is ripe and sweet, yet nicely controlled, the oak neatly integrated with quite a precocious tart finish. Maybe it just needs a little more persistency, but this will do nicely. (This blend includes 20% whole bunch. I tried a 40% whole bunch that is being trialled in three barrels. I actually preferred this, so it will either be blended together or bottled separately - no decision has been made yet.) Drink 2025-2038.

  Black with a bit of purple. The bouquet offers a similar style of ultra lush raspberry that we saw in the Bourgogne. An explosion of fruit, with density, some firm structure behind, not too much acidity but all a cohesive unit with enough fruit to cover the 13.8% alcohol. An early malolactic makes this wine easier to read.

  This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose. More interesting are the rich, vibrant and intense larger-scaled flavors that possess very good mid-palate concentration before terminating in an even firmer, powerful and impressively long quality. This also appears to offer very fine quality in a built-to-age package. Drink from 2035+.

  The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru had only finished its malolactic two weeks before my visit. Though I spent time with the sample from barrel, I think it was just a bit too soon to really get a reading on the nose. The palate is more expressive and harmonious: crunchy black cherry and blueberry fruit, fine structure, a touch of white pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle because there is a fine Charmes-Chambertin here. Drink 2026-2048.

  A vivid and vibrant fresh purple, reflecting the low pH (3.30). The nose is exuberant and vivacious at the same time. This is a late malolactic wine and has been reduced, but not today. Despite the thick texture and super charged raspberry, signs of higher alcohol (in fact 15%) I don’t feel any specific heat and the Charmes-Chambertin shows a pretty long finish.

  The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pure and quite precocious bouquet with black cherries, crushed violet and peony aromas, actually not unlike a Romanée-Saint-Vivant in style. Thet palate is succulent on the entry with candied orange peel infusing the mainly black fruit that merges into more red fruit towards the velvety finish. Quite gorgeous. Drink 2026-2048.

  A wonderfully expressive and broad-ranging nose displays notes of black cherry and raspberry coulis, spice, violet and sandalwood. The exceptionally rich and unusually full-bodied flavors brim with dry extract while exhibiting excellent power on the mouth coating, balanced and complex finale that goes on and on. I very much like the outstanding persistence and this is an impressive Ech. Drink from 2035+.

  The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru offers real intensity on the nose, quite powerful with pure dark cherries, cassis, crushed violet and blood orange. Stylistically, this is not unlike Thomas Collardot’s good friend, Sébastien Cathiard’s in style. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, veins of blood orange and a pinch of sea salt. Lovely structure and focus on the finish. Excellent - this is an Echézeaux from the top drawer. Drink 2026-2050.

  23 barrels – lucky man! Inky purple black, in colour. Starts a bit blockbuster for Echezeaux, then refines somewhat. Still, this is not for the fainthearted. Quite firm tannins but ripe enough. Decent weight behind, but this is still unresolved. A few blackberries though predominantly red fruit. 13.8% alcohol. Note that the malolactic for this wine was fairly late, taking place in the summer.

  The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Village, which contains around 15% whole bunch, had only finished its malo a month prior to my visit. It has a dense, intense, blackcurrant and cassis-scented bouquet that will need time to mellow. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and fleshy but the black cherry fruit is framed by fine tannins and the finish is so silky smooth that you cannot help falling for its charms. Drink 2025-2040.

The delicious middle weight flavors possess a gorgeous texture if perhaps not quite the same complexity on the balanced and overtly stony finish. I suspect that more depth will progressively develop over time. Drink 2031+.

Sweetness comes through then a drier note, this is still a gorgeous wine, but without quite the same chiselled limestone note which demonstrated the authority of the barrel-aged Clos des 60 Ouvrées.

The sleek and wonderfully refined flavors are lacy but punchy while also brimming with minerality on the tension-filled bitter cherry pit-infused finish that exhibits excellent length. This is lovely stuff though a wine that will require at least some patience.

  An airy, cool and slightly more elegant nose isn't quite as spicy, but it is certainly higher-toned with its combination of red and dark currant, cherry and discreetly floral-suffused aromas. There is once again excellent energy to the strikingly well-detailed flavors that are almost as mineral-laden, all wrapped in a refreshing and youthfully austere finale. Good stuff and despite being firmly structured, this could actually be enjoyed young.

  Healthy dark red. Aromas of purple berries, black cherry and licorice convey a musky quality as well as a subtle liqueur-like aspect. Fat and very ripe but not a sweet style; in fact, this is less expressive and complex than Landanger's other two amphora wines in 2016. Suggestions of black pepper and herbs carry through to the finish, which conveys an impression of thickness but is still quite primary and undeveloped, even a bit pinched. Here I much prefer the "regular" version of 60 Ouvrées.

  The 2016 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has more richness and intensity than the Corton-Bressandes at this early stage, with layers of black cherry and raspberry coulis, brown spices and sous-bois surfacing with time. There is certainly good complexity here. The palate is fresh and detailed on the entry, fine-grained tannin, well-judged acidity and a lively, judiciously spiced finish that feels long and caressing. Bon vin.

  Full ruby-red. Darker and more reticent on the nose than the Bressandes, conveying a stronger element of stony minerality and a note of licorice. Then vivacious and sharply delineated in the mouth but much more closed than the Bressandes owing to its mineral energy. Finishes with suave, fine-grained tannins and excellent grip. Very classy juice!

  The ripe and ultra-fresh aromas are from the darker side of the fruit spectrum while including plenty of spice, warm earth, menthol and plenty of sauvage character. There is both fine detail and a beguiling texture to the equally broad-shouldered and even more mineral-inflected flavors that possess even better complexity on the balanced and hugely long finish. Unusually, this appears to be just a bit less structured than the Bressandes and should also be approachable on the younger side if that's your preference.

  There is a pronounced ripeness to the less elegant and much more sauvage-inflected aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, freshly turned earth and forest floor nuances. The palate impression though is more like that of the Bressandes in that it's muscular yet reasonably refined while evidencing focused power on the well-balanced and gorgeously persistent finish. I very much like the mouth feel thanks to the dense but fine-grained tannins and this should also amply reward extended cellaring.

  The 2015 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has more finesse than the premier crus from Volnay and Pommard that preceded it during my tasting at the domaine, quite floral with pure dark black cherry and hints of anise developing with aeration. The palate has a gentle grip in the mouth. The tannins feel firm lending this masculinity, although there appears to be sufficient fruit to back it up. There is pleasant saline aftertaste in situ although I would like to see more finesse developing during the remainder of its barrel maturation.

  Full ruby. Austere nose hints at black fruits, licorice and soil tones, with a violet element emerging with air. Broad and deep but utterly primary and unforthcoming. The dark fruit flavors showed increasing creaminess as the wine opened in the glass, but this very firmly structured wine will need extended aging to absorb its substantial tongue-coating tannins and to reveal its full personality. The longest of these 2015s to this point.

  The 2020 Musigny Grand Cru is 100% whole bunch as usual. This has a very complete and delineated bouquet with mineral-rich red berry fruit, touches of pressed rose petal emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, moderate depth, quite "linear’ for a Musigny with a very sapid finish. Not bad, although I feel this is slightly dictated by the stem addition at the moment. I would be intrigued to revisit this after bottling because it is difficult seeing which way this is going to head. Drink 2028-2050.

  Two and a half barrels, one new, with 100% whole bunches. Both these elements show a little in the very youthful wine. Otherwise the nose is discretion itself, before the fruit explodes in magical fashion at the start of the palate. Yet is there quite the weight and persistence of a truly great wine? There is the right acidity and a fine sense of balance, but the wine stops short of the full majesty of a truly great Musigny this year.

  The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from two parcels, the one towards the top of the parcel providing the 70% whole bunch. The nose is fresh, taut and quite mineral-driven with black cherries, raspberry and light rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine tension, quite poised with a bit of sinew towards the finish. It will require 4-6 years in bottle just to shave those edges, but I appreciate here the spicy aftertaste. Drink 2026-2048.

  Here there is no reductive funk as there is a lovely purity to the super-fresh and quite floral nose of red currants, spice and newly turned earth. There is an almost painful intensity to the highly energetic and tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that already offer impressive depth and sneaky good length. Despite having reasonable size and weight, this is not an especially big Bonnes Mares though it is one allied with plenty of power and punch. Drink 2036+.

That stem addition is noticeable on the nose but combines well with the broody black fruit, white pepper and wild mint aromas.   The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin les Mazoyères Grand Cru includes 80% whole cluster fruit this year, a high percentage due to the age of the vines planted in 1902. There is fine delineation here, precise black cherry and cranberry scents with a touch of cold granite. It is a nose that demands respect, deservedly so. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple black and red fruit, very pure and smooth with a graceful, marmalade-tinged finish that lingers. This should grow up to be a very seductive, comely Charmes-Chambertin with a long future ahead.

  A beautifully complex nose offers up notes of red currant, blue pinot fruit, plum and plenty of pungent earth nuances that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The velvety yet strikingly intense flavors brim with sap that renders the mid-palate more approachable though it seems blatantly clear from the very firm and robust finish that this distinctly serious effort is going to require plenty of cellar time before it arrives at its apogee. In sum, this hugely persistent effort is first-rate.

  Healthy dark red. Very ripe aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice. The richest and largest-scaled of these 2014s to this point, displaying very concentrated but primary flavors of medicinal black cherry, blackberry, menthol and minerals. Big, dusty tannins are nicely supported by brooding black fruits on the very long, rising finish. The grapes here are always affected by millerandage and there are rarely any bad berries, Vincent told me, adding that this cuvée is always the easiest to vinify as well as "our most concentrated wine." This vineyard is the source of Domaine de la Vougeraie's massale selection for replanting.

There is superb mid-palate density to the opulent yet serious big-bodied flavors that are shaped by a firm core of dense and very firm tannins on the hugely long yet impeccably well-balanced finish. This muscular effort is also going to need extended cellaring if you wish to see its full, and ample, potential realized.

  Here too there is a mentholated top note to the much earthier aromas of poached plum, underbrush, red currant and touches of the sauvage. There is excellent verve to the equally broad-shouldered and muscular flavors that possess outstanding complexity on the tannic, serious and beautifully long finish that is a bit less austere than it usually is at this early juncture. This beautifully well-made effort will also require extended bottle age to reveal its full potential, but it should very much be worth the wait.

  The 2019 Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru comes from the 2.77-hectare monopole. This was actually quite closed on the nose compared with Faiveley’s Gevrey Grand Crus, coming across earthy and rather sullen at first, and opening with earthy/woodland aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and harmonious on the entry. The fine, lightly spiced finish reveals clove and touches of graphite. Nice persistence here. This holds a lot of promise.

  The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is a blend of the original Faiveley parcel plus around 0.5 hectares gained through their acquisition of Dupont-Tisserandot. It has quite an intense bouquet of blackberry, briar and wild strawberry scents, coming across a little burly compared to the more nuanced Latricières-Chambertin. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, the palate perhaps showing more potential than the aromatics at the moment. There is very good weight here, fine mineralité and quite a precise, sustained finish. Give it five or six years in bottle.

  A more deeply pitched and brooding nose only grudgingly reveals its aromas of cassis plum liqueur and pungent earth where the latter is also found on the vibrant and well-detailed big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors that deliver excellent depth and persistence. This is not as dense as the best in the range, but it should have no trouble amply repaying 12 to 15 years of bottle aging. Drink through 2032+.

This equally broad-shouldered flavors aren't quite as dense but they're certainly finer with good minerality and lift on the palate coating, balanced and beautifully persistent finale.   Incredibly dense purple rather than black. While the bouquet follows a similar refrain to others in the Gouges 2020 line-up, there is more natural class from the vineyard site below. The clear limestone feel comes up through the middle and the palate is entirely red fruit. This one will really work. Refined tannins here. And the right acid balance. Excellent.

  The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was a little more reduced than Gouges’s other cuvées, opening gradually to reveal blackberry, wild hedgerow and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lithe and silky in the mouth, and fleshy with a judicious touch of white pepper toward the finish. The shortfall in grip and substance is sufficiently compensated with elegance. Drink 2024 - 2048.

  Very reductive. Dense, almost sombre purple. A little toastiness too. Will rack end November to bottle Feb/March, and it needs the racking. Sweetly ripe, very dense, dark cherry here, not too cooked but it is quite a monster on the dark side. Just give it twenty years… Just a little fresher at the finish.

  The 2016 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains was cropped at a paltry 11 hectoliters per hectare due to the frost. I have to admit that the aromatics lacked the natural harmony and cohesion of the Les Pruliers and the Porrets, the fruit perhaps a little subdued by some reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite fleshy with more red fruit than black. The backbone feels less strong here and as such I suspect this will be more approachable than its siblings.

  Healthy dark red. Slightly medicinal aromas of black cherry and chocolate are complicated by a whiff of animal fur. Plush and fine-grained, offering lovely pliancy to the flavors of dark berries, chocolate and tobacco; plumper than the Les Saint-Georges but without that wine's definition and cut. The very rich tannins coat the front teeth but this very ripe wine is already quite expressive.

There is outstanding density to the powerful, robust and bold big-bodied flavors that possess seriously good concentration where the sap does a good job of buffering the very firm tannic spine shaping the superbly persistent finish. This is textbook Vaucrains and as such, it's going to need extended cellaring.

It is also the most refined wine in the range as the vibrant medium weight flavors exude evident minerality on the chalky, lingering and well-balanced finale. If this can add depth with bottle age, it should merit the upper end of my range

  The age of the vines is quite diverse in this 1.8ha block, ranging from 20 to 80 years. It's a comparatively forward red, especially for a Nuits from the south side of the village. Notes of summer berries and tobacco pouch mingle appealingly on the nose and palate with supporting acidity and scented oak, 20% new.

Otherwise there is more volume and mid-palate density to the bigger and mostly muscular flavors that possess a less refined mouthfeel on the powerful, driving and more obviously structured finale.   The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers wafts from the glass with an appealing bouquet of raspberries, red cherries, spiced plums, dried flowers and earthy forest floor. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a ripe core of fruit, tangy acids and a firm, stony finish. It's a suave, nicely integrated rendition of a climat that can sometimes be forbiddingly structural in its youth.

  The 2015 Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru includes 55% whole bunch fruit with 50% new oak. It has a composed bouquet with fine delineation, crushed rose petal and cold wet limestone permeating through the black and red fruit. It conveys the imperious personality I like from my Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, black fruit stained with orange rind and white pepper, conveying the structure and slight aloofness I appreciate in young Clos Saint-Denis, reassuring that this will age over 15-20 years. This is lip-smackingly delicious and just utterly superb.

The underlying material appears to be present such that this should eat its wood and overall this is very classy juice.

  The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Goulots is the first to be completely biodynamically farmed, although Florence told me that she only really noticed the difference apropos the color of the grapes in the 2016 vintage. It has a complex bouquet with redcurrant, cranberry and blood orange, very focused with deftly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little meatiness/dried blood developing underneath the carapace of black fruit, white pepper and Moroccan spice towards the finish. I love the tension here, not powerful but it just has the energy you would not anticipate from such a warm season.

  While the wood treatment is a bit more evident it still remains a background element on the ripe but airy nose of spicy, floral and earthy red berry fruit aromas. The elevation of the vineyards is especially noticeable in a ripe vintage like 2015 as the medium weight flavors display plenty of minerality and a racy energy that carries over to the saline finish that is shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins. Lovely juice.

  Here there is that peculiar type of reduction that the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis. By contrast there is good verve and a really lovely texture to the nicely voluminous flavors that display noticeable rusticity on the youthfully austere, firm and lingering finish. Like several wines in the range, this will need to add depth but if it does, it could be really quite lovely. Drink through 2030+.

This cuvée will be just Sur Lavelle from 2021 with the rest going into the village wine. Fine mid purple, barely reduced, a little bit of blackcurrant leaf maybe. A certain sucrosity on the palate but this is a Monthelie which will give a lot of pleasure. 13.7% alcohol.

Rich deep purple, the nose is a little bit less accessible, a little bit stricter, than La Riotte, offering some blackcurrant and dark raspberry, then packs a real punch at the back, with still darker fruit, pierced by a saline note at the crunchy finish. Quite different in character all the way through. 13.85% alcohol.

  This is also wonderfully spicy with its very fresh aromas of black cherry, raspberry, exotic tea, hoisin and anise wisps. The mouthfeel of the broad-shouldered flavors is again highly seductive yet serious as the very firm finale is dusty and somewhat raspy where a touch of warmth eventually emerges. As noted, this is extremely firm and is going to need a very long snooze in a cool cellar before it reveals its full potential. Drink 2039+.
