2018 Guy Breton Cote de Brouilly
    Beaujolais, FRANCE
    $69. 99 Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

Also known as "Petit Max" by his friends, Guy Breton is certainly a name in everyone's ear ever since Kermit Lynch dubbed him, together with Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet and Jean Foillard, as Beaujolais famous "Gang of Four" in the '80s. The essence of their philosophy: take a step back, appreciate and cultivate old vines, apply organic farming practices, avoid the use of sulphur, let natural ferments do their magic and help the terroir express itself through minimal intervention. Following these principals, each of them has ever since proven that Beaujolais is more than just 'Nouveau' and can indeed produce meaningful, complex and wonderful wines.

Breton loves wines that are easy to drink, and his are typically the lightest in color, the lowest in alcohol, and the least tannic of the Gang of Four. He took over his grandfather's domaine in 1986 and is nowadays farming 4 hectares organically, with around 80% being planted in the Morgon appellation. The age of his vines varies, with the oldest 80-year-old vines dedicated to his “Vieilles Vignes” cuvée. After careful selection of grapes in the vineyard, vinification begins with carbonic maceration at low temperatures. Fermentation occurs naturally and lasts usually between 15 and 21 days. Once the process is finished the grapes are pressed in an old wooden press. The wines are then aged in used Burgundian barrels before they are bottled unfiltered and unfined.

The 2017 Côte de Brouilly exhibits aromas of cassis, plums and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, succulent palate that's nicely concentrated, with chalky tannins, tangy acids and good depth at the core. It's very promising.

A-Mano (meaning hand made) is the labour of love of the incredibly energetic and enthusiastic American winemaker, Mark Shannon, and partner, Elvezia Sbalchiero. Mark, a born and bred Californian, fell in love with Puglia and “after years of technical winemaking, had almost forgotten that the right way to make wine is with love”. Fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in Salice Salento in the very south of Puglia where the sandy soils are perfect for Negroamaro. No oak is used in the winemaking process, after fermentation the wine is aged in underground concrete tanks.

A rich, chewy red that boasts a long, robust finish.

Dense midnight black colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Heady aromas of dried cherries, liquorice and black plum rise out of the glass trailed by dried herbs, scorched earth and spice. Rich and plump, the full bodied palate is engulfed with black plum, dried cherry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which sit over scorched earth, dried herb and spice back drop. Ripe chewy tannins firm up the finish. The aftertaste long and robust.

Straight cinsault, the fancy release, mid 60’s planting of the gear. In Swartland.
Fine boned red wine expression but with heaps of freshness, buckets of spice, sappy tannins and a powdery, minerally finish. Lighter style, fine boned, silky and elegant. A very pure, almost pinot like expression but with more grunt. Stellar expression. Drink 2021 - 2027

    $779.88 Dozen

Crafted from old bush vines planted in the 1950’s and 1960’s which are grown without irrigation on various types of granite soil. The vineyards are planted on varying facing slopes bringing tremendous variety to the fruit. Fruit from other selected sites within the appellation are also purchased to complete the final blends.

The fruit is fermented 100% whole bunch in large concrete tanks and wooden vats, with post ferment maceration continuing for up to 4 months. Maturation takes place in a mixture of barrels and large, neutral foudres. Inspired by the history of the old, long forgotten Cape Blends that were around before the advent of modern winemaking.

A blend of 56% Shiraz, 19% Grenache, 12.5% Cinsault and 12.5% Tinta Barocca, the 2018 Family Red Blend begins with a fruity and rustic nose of wild brush, smoked meat, black olive, elements of dark cherry and plum before showcasing subtle aromas of wilted flowers and baked clay. Medium-bodied, the palate offers flavors of juicy tobacco and bitter black tea and a balanced structure with firm, buttressing tannins as the wine sits on the tongue. The wine concludes with a drying finish and lasting flavors of black cherry skin and dusty plums with a nuance of undusted leather. I can see this being incredibly versatile with food. Just give it some time in the cellar before opening. Drink 2022 - 2032.

The 2018 Red Blend, comprising Shiraz, Grenache, Cinsault and Tinta Barocca fermented in concrete tanks, offers appealing mulberry, black plum, curry leaf and potpourri aroma that gradually gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with red berry fruit, white pepper and clove. The finish has a precision that I admire and a saltiness that lingers in the mouth. Toothsome! Drink 2022 - 2032.

The 2016 Barbaresco Angelo, the estate's top bottling, is a blend of 50% Ronchi, 25% Montersino and 25% Loreto, done entirely in cask. Reticent at first, the 2016 needs several hours of air to start opening up. A super-classic expression of Nebbiolo follows, with hints of menthol, leather, iron, violet spice and licorice that develop later. The 2016 remains a wine of fascinating contrasts. It is at times light on its feet, while at other moments it comes across as much more powerful.

The 2016 Barbaresco Angelo is the most elaborate and oak-forward of the three Barbaresco expressions presented by Albino Rocca this year. The wine opens to dark color saturation with blackberry, dried fruit and plum. You get extra layers of spice, smoke, tar and tilled earth as well. The wine is robust and full-bodied. It deserves to sit next to a nice cut of steak on the grill.

    2019 Almaviva Epu
    Valle del Maipo, CHILE
    $120. 00 Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Almaviva is the ambitious partnership of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild group (Bordeaux) and Viña Concha y Toro (Chile) with the intention of creating a wine of exceptional character, complexity and ageing potential from extraordinary Chilean terroir. Launched with the 1996 vintage, consistent vineyard improvements and meticulous winemaking today mark Almaviva as one of the finest wines produced in Chile. This year we see the release of the second wine from Almaviva, named Epu. With a slightly higher Cabernet component in this wine the feel is more reminiscent of Bordeaux.

    Other Reviews....
The first truly international release of the second wine is going to be the 2019 Epu, which has changed image and label, looking a little more like Almaviva, and is going to be sold through the Bordeaux négoce. 2019 was a very dry vintage, and the blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Carmenere, 2% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc with slightly higher alcohol than 2018 and with lower acidity, matured in used barriques for one year. In terms of freshness, the wine is quite similar to the 2018 that I tasted next to it, obviously a little younger, quite intense and fruit-driven, spicy and herbal, with a creamy texture and fine-grained tannins. It's a second wine, but they also want to do something different and Epu is perhaps a little more classical, perhaps this is more Bordeaux and Almaviva is more Chilean. 70,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2020 and January 2021. Drink 2021 - 2028.

2019 Almaviva continues an excellent run of vintages, with the moderately warm year the perfect situation for the Carmenere component.

    Other Reviews....
The 2019 Almaviva is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carmenère (from Peumo), 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot, higher in Carmenere and reflecting a warmer and drier vintage when then bottled wine reached 15% alcohol. It fermented with destemmed grapes in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels, 75% of them new, for 18 months. Here, the Carmenere adds herbal freshness and changes the aromatic profile when compared with the 2019 Epu. 2019 was a good year for Carmenere, which suffers in extremely warm years like 2017, but in moderately warm years like 2019, the variety displays that herbal character and has good density. It's full-bodied and round, with saturated tannins, tasty, spicy and long, with a dry, serious finish. It's balsamic, with notes of camphor and a silky and velvety texture. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021. Drink 2021 - 2030.

Antinori’s Peppoli was first made in 1985 and year in year out proves to be a reliable, great value Chianti Classico. Produced from predominately Sangiovese grapes, the wine was aged for approximately 9 months in large Slavonian oak casks with a small parcel in stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness of fruit.

    2018 Ao Yun Shangri-La Pre-Arrival Offer
    CHINA
    $530. 00 Bottle
    $6360.00 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Ao Yun is the realisation of a dream to produce world class, Bordeaux-style wine from China. Commissioned by Moët Hennessy, Dr. Tony Jordan embarked on a four year long mission to scour the terrain of China for an ideal climate to produce top class Cabernet Sauvignon. Settling in the foothills of the Himalayas, to the north of the Yunnan province, Ao Yun hails from the legendary and remote village of Shangri-La. Sitting at an altitude ranging between 2,200 and 2,600 metres above sea level, the estate is named after the magnificent clouds that gather above the permanently snow-capped mountain ranges: in Mandarin, “Ao Yun” means “flying above the clouds”.

Farming is handled by local families across the 28 hectares of vineyards, divided among 314 blocks with 727 tiny sub-parcels. Organic viticulture is practiced in the vineyards, while everything is done by hand with no machinery. The 2018 Ao Yun is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot.

    Other Reviews....
I love the depth and complexity of the nose, which brings you down deeply into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. The purity of the fruit, including cassis, is the real thing. This is full-bodied, but remains so fresh and vertical on the palate. The tannins are so fine and integrated, producing a millefeuille-like layering of tannin and cool, blue fruit. Incredible wine. The greatest wine made in China so far. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 7% syrah and 4% petit verdot. 26,000 bottles made. Drinkable now, but will be so much better in four or five years.

Having tasted the 2018 Ao Yun for the first time in May 2021 at high altitude in the village of Adong (where the Ao Yun winery is located), it was fascinating to retaste this vintage much closer to sea level in Beijing on December 2, 2021. This proved to be a useful comparative opportunity too, having only a few hours earlier shown the 2017 vintage in a tasting of various Shangri-La wines in Beijing the evening before. The 2018 Ao Yun is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot. As observed in my note from May, this blend shows increased confidence in some of the other varieties coming more online in Ao Yun’s four village sites of Xidang, Sinong, Shuori and Adong (with Merlot playing an increased role). The 2018 Ao Yun maintains its very deep purple appearance. On the nose, albeit youthful, there is already open and abundant super-ripe cassis, black cherry, mulberry, blueberry and black plum fruit with less pyrazine observable in this bottle (although this becomes more overt on the palate). That core of fruit is complemented by subtle new oak notes of clove, toast and smoke. On the palate, the 2018 Ao Yun has abundant, fine-grained and coating tannins with some lively acidity and well-integrated 14.5% alcohol, these structural elements being well-knitted together with the vibrant core of fruit, touch of herbaceous character (sage, mint) and subtle new oak notes. With its long length and marked concentration, although youthful, the 2018, tasted closer to sea level, has the kind of approachability similar to some Napa Cabernet blends. But it is unquestionably super youthful and is taking on entirely its own identity as the very best blend of these four remarkable village vineyard sites (each at different altitudes). The 2018 is just nudging ahead of the 2017 and 2015 in terms of quality. It will be fascinating to see its evolution in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2033.

Gorgeously seductive nose, this is rich and abundant, aromas bursting out the glass, smells sweet and spicy, five spice fragrance with sweet blackcurrant and black cherry aromas. Mouthcoating and invigorating on the palate, totally harmonious and balanced with the salinity and wet stone nuances coming through backed by ripe, but so well defined, fruit flavors. Such purity on both the nose and palate. This is seriously refined, aromatics are preserved, balancing power with excellent acidity, so you get these bright and energetic flavours but still with structure. Seductive but this also has a sense of classicism. Lovely saline elements and cooling touch at the end with all the flavours lingering long in the mouth. Will be interesting to see how it ages. Polished, smooth and ripe tannins that have plenty of movement in them. Ao Yun has been a wine with confidence and personality since its first vintage of 2013, and here balances concentrated damson and black cherry fruits with fragrant black tea, mandarin peel and sage together with earthier smoked cumin and saffran spice. 2018 was a late harvest through to November 15 (beginning September 7) and ripening under cooler, dry skies in November has translated into drawn out sculpted flavours that reflect the mountain site, and low yields of 21hl/h. Initial ageing took place in 50% Chinese earthenware jars and 50% oak barrels for five months, then a further 10 months in 30% new oak barrels. The team introduced village crus in this year also, drawing them from the four villages where the vines are located, and keeping 54% of overall production for Ao Yun itself - just another clue to the ambitions at this briliant estate. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040.

Composed of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Arômes de Pavie has an alcohol of 14.78% and a pH of 3.57. It is aging in French oak barriques, 70% new. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a little swirling to unleash its exuberant scents of stewed black plums, black cherry compote and boysenberries, plus hints of tar, sautéed herbs and chargrill. The full-bodied palate packs in the black fruit layers, framed by soft tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy.

The 2020 Arômes de Pavie represents a major step up in quality vis-à-vis previous vintages. It is a deep, statuesque wine endowed with tremendous power, richness and resonance. Plum, mocha, licorice, espresso and spice all flesh out in the glass. I can't wait to taste this in bottle. This is the first year in which the blend is equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc, both increasingly from plots dedicated to the Arômes, a departure from the past, when this wine was a selection of younger-vine fruit and lots that did not make it into the Grand Vin.

Deeply colored, the wine offers red and black plums, flowers, boysenberry, espresso and dark chocolate on the nose. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, lush and concentrated, velvet textures and loads of sweet, fleshy, flashy, dark red fruits, spice, espresso and cocoa in the finish. Aromes de Pavie is no longer the second wine of Pavie. Because all its fruit comes from a specific 11 hectare parcel, it should be looked at as its own brand. Powerful and upfront, with a thick layer of liquorice and clove, blueberry and blackberry fruit. A little more of a monolith than the main estate wine of Pavie - something that you find often this year, where the tannins seem to go to the second wines. 70% new oak, 3.57pH. A yield of 35hl/ha.

50% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Franc. From designated parcels (11 ha) on the plateau. Cask sample.
Ripe and pure-fruited but the freshness really comes through with this (first time) 50/50 blend. Chalky, mineral note behind. Fine-grained tannins. Drives on the finish with the fruit and freshness. More than adequate understudy while awaiting the grand vin.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve Georges de Latour is a blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve is fabulous. Inky, rich and explosive, the 2018 is a fine addition to the lineage of one of Napa Valley's most historic wines. Inky red fruit, chocolate, leather and licorice all open in the glass. Aeration brings out floral top notes, raspberry and a hint of blood orange. There is plenty of depth, but the tannins are finer than they were a few years ago. Shorter time on the skins and a reduction in barrel fermentations really allow the pedigree of these Rutherford sites to come through. The 2018 is sensational. Drink 2026 - 2048.

Stéphane Tissot is a tireless and vigorous promoter of individual sites and natural wines. He brings technological experience from his work in Australia and South Africa, and combines this with his ruthless yield reduction philosophy and very serious 'small batch' winemaking which is carried out as naturally as possible. Tissot plants mostly on clay and limestone, all sites are farmed biodynamically and yields are kept low, averaging only 30 h/l per hectare. Ferments are allowed to commence naturally and the still wines are bottled without filtration and little or no SO2 is added across the board. Vibrancy and fruit presence is a signature across all his wines. Given Stéphane is constantly experimenting and obsessively seeking improvements; he is at the forefront of the Jura revolution and produces terroir-driven wines of depth, intensity, interest and undeniable quality.

The grapes for the 2018 Pinot Noir Sous La Tour come from a limestone-rich plot near the Tour de Curon. The grapes fermented with full clusters and indigenous yeasts in open oak vats, and the wine matured in 228-liter oak barrels for one year. It's livelier than the En Barberon, more complete with more ripeness but without excess, and it has a strong chalkiness that makes it beautifully textured. Drink 2021 - 2026.

The second wine is the 2017 Macán Clásico, which since 2016 has been vinified in the new "cuverie" that allows for a more precise extraction for each plot fermenting in stainless steel. In 2017, they reduced the new oak to 50%, and 10% of the volume was aged in American oak barrels crafted by the Vega Sicilia coopers. They were also more selective with the press wine. The élevage lasted 12 months, and the wine was kept in bottle for no less than 18 months. They lost two-thirds of the crop due to the terrible frost, and the end of the season was warm and dry with an early harvest. They did a softer everything, and the wine has a creamy and gentle quality, ripe without excess, a little in the style of the 2015, with finer tannins, a fine thread and texture and a long, dry and supple finish. This is definitely a warmer year for Macán Clásico but a triumph over the adverse conditions of the year. 37,211 bottles, 1,057 magnums and some larger formats were produced, a much shorter crop. It was bottled in August 2019. Drink 2021 - 2026.

The 2016 Macán saw a new vinification by plot with the introduction of their new fermentation room. The Tempranillo came from selected vineyards from their 92 hectares; it fermented in oak vats and matured in 4,000-liter and barriques (50/50) for some 16 months and was kept in bottle for three years before being released. They think this 2016 is finally the style they were looking for, a wine with density and freshness. 2016 was the first year they vinified and aged from start to finish in the new winery, and they believe that gave them better control over the fermentations. 2016 is a year with more freshness than 2015, and they are trying to achieve wines with more tension and less power and oak than in the beginning. This could very well be the finest vintage of Macán so far. The grapes were picked between September 17th and October 3rd. 87,792 bottles, 2,570 magnums and some larger formats were produced. The wine was bottled in September 2018. Drink 2020 - 2028.

Les Granges is the Baudry family’s vin de bistro—a delicious, entry-level Cabernet Franc designed for early drinking. It comes mostly from the Estate’s younger vines (planted between 1985 and 1988) grown on the alluvial gravel soils of the terraces by the river Vienne. This is a terroir that loves long periods of dry and warm weather, which is exactly what it received in 2020. The fruit was picked by hand and fermented cool for two weeks in cement tanks, before being raised for seven to 10 months, also in cement.

    Other Reviews....
Sourced from a single block on the valley floor, where the vines have their feet in free-draining sandy/gravel soils, the 2020 Chinon Les Granges is made a lighter, fruit-driven style with a fine-grained tannic profile. This flows easily with no sense of anything being forced. It's full of bright raspberry, violets and a hint of blackberries and cream; there's a mere whiff of reduction on opening, so give it a little bit of air. Easy to like, bright and fresh and can be enjoyed in youth. Drink 2021 - 2025.

Baudry’s rosé is drawn from vines rooted in the gravel terroir of Grézeaux and a parcel called Les Balais, which was originally planted by Matthieu’s father some 30 years ago. In contrast to Grézeaux, Les Balais is on clay and flint (silex) soils. Picked by hand, there was brief skin contact and then the wine fermented via indigenous yeasts—two-thirds in Italian-made concrete tanks and the remainder in stainless steel. The result is a layered, fleshy and complex rosé with lots of earthy, saline minerality to complex the red fruit characters. Unique and delicious.

    Other Reviews....
Brilliant onion skin color. Suave, mineral-accented aromas of fresh red berries and tangerine on the sharply focused nose. Dry and energetic on the palate, offering sappy strawberry, bitter cherry and orange zest flavors that show excellent clarity and mineral lift. Closes extremely long and silky, displaying resonating floral and red fruit notes and a faint touch of anise.

Colore is Bibi Graetz's Gran Vin, from very old vineyards of Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino. Poor soils mixed with sand and stone create the perfect terroir.

Deep dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Super expressive aromatics entrance the olfactory senses with red currant and red cherry scents in union with hints of rose petals, graphite, earth, tobacco, fresh herbs and spicy cedar. Carrying superb intensity of flavour, the palate is energetic and finessed with a powerful core of delicious ripe red currant and red cherry fruits underpinned by a muscular structure and wonderfully fresh acidity. Earth, dried herb, subtle graphite, light cedary tobacco characters and spice play their part on the back half. Well cut and nimble it finishes exceptionally long with a focused core of red fruits.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

    Other Reviews….
Dressed for a party, the Bibi Graetz 2019 Colore celebrates the estate's 20th anniversary with a special commemorative (2000-2019) bottle. This vintage of Colore is 100% Sangiovese (the small part of Colorino in the blend we saw last year has been removed) because Bibi thought the Sangiovese elegant enough to stand alone. Fruit comes from three vineyard sites with 70-, 80- and 90-year-old vines, respectively. The wine offers big intensity and beautifully lifted aromas and more textural support than we saw in the slightly thinner 2018 vintage. The bouquet reveals balsam herb, cassis, pressed rose, garden mint and crushed stone. Fruit from the southern-most site, Poggio Matto in Casciano del Murlo (in the province of Siena), was blended in at a greater percentage to help build the structure and momentum of this cellar-worthy wine. Drink 2022 - 2045.

A pure expression of Sangiovese, the Bibi Graetz 2019 Testamatta is a wine in constant evolution. Bibi has added 17 more hectares of vineyard to the program, with 12 hectares in Fiesole (north of Florence) and 5 hectares in San Donato in Colle (south of Florence) with 70-year-old vines. The base of the wine sees fruit from old vines planted in the 1950s in the cool-climate Lamole subzone of Chianti Classico. These new terroirs bring a lot more aromatic nuance and complexity to the wine with perfumed blue flower, candied orange peel, wet earth and plumy black fruit. White Alberese soils add a strong chalky mineral signature to the finish of this elegantly streamlined and linear Tuscan red. Drink 2022 - 2042.

Dark red in colour with black tinged edges showing good depth and a bright red hue. Fragrant crunchy red cherry and winter strawberry aromas have a forest floor overlay with notions of toasty oak and stalky herb notes also evident. Red cherry and winter strawberry fruits are underpinned by vibrant acidity which gives the palate a youthful crunchy like feel. Toasty oak, forest floor and spice characters ensue. Faintly chalky tannins with a bright medium length aftertaste.

The 2016 Pintia comes from a cooler but drier vintage, and the wine has a little less alcohol and more freshness. It fermented in oak vats and matured in mostly new and mostly French oak, but this year they used a little more American oak with the idea to increase density. 2016 was an atypical year in Toro; they had plenty of time to pick the grapes with lower alcohol and wines with more elegance. This is clearly a more elegant vintage than 2015. The wine has some notes that took me to the Northern Rhône, and the oak is neatly integrated—it seems to get better integrated in cooler years. There is a mix of black and red fruit that denotes good freshness. The palate is medium-bodied, with a distinct lack of rusticity and density, and it's more fluid. It has abundant, chalky and fine-grained tannins and a supple, long and dry finish. 230,032 bottles, 6,517 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in May 2018. Drink 2020 - 2026.

Saturated ruby. Expansive cherry, black raspberry, potpourri and exotic spice aromas are complemented by subtle licorice and woodsmoke flourishes. Vibrant and sharply focused in the mouth, with a spine of juicy acidity adding focus to palate-staining black and blue fruit liqueur, violet pastille, mocha and spicecake flavors. The floral quality resonates emphatically on the clinging finish, which features lingering cherry and smoky mineral notes. There's noteworthy elegance here, a trait that's not exactly common for Toro. Drink 2024 - 2034.

Blueberry, lavender and some vanilla and cedar character. It’s medium-bodied with round tannins and a flavorful finish. Nice, creamy texture. It finishes reserved, polished and complex. So drinkable now, but one of the cellar as well.

The 2017 Alión, the only wine produced here, comes from a challenging year marked by spring frost and a warm and dry end of the season, so they reduced the amount of new oak by 8%. It fermented with indigenous yeasts, and 10% of the volume aged in concrete, completely unoaked. The change in the oak regimen helped with the style of the vintage, which was marked by the frost that hit part of the Alión vineyards. Furthermore, the end of the season was warm and dry, and they had to work to control ripeness and power and perhaps the possibility of more aggressive tannins. It's a classical Alión, with some developed aromas, juicy and round but not heavy, with just a tad of earthy rusticity. With time, it develops more balsamic notes and hints of licorice. 230,032 bottles, 7,04 magnums, 614 double magnums and a handful of bigger sizes were produced. It was bottled in June 2019. Drink 2021 - 2026.

Opaque ruby. Primary dark fruit, floral and vanilla aromas are sharpened by a spicy suggestion of cracked pepper and woodsmoke, and licorice notes build in the glass. Juicy and smooth on the palate, offering densely packed, spice-laced bitter cherry, blackberry and fruitcake flavors that firm up slowly with aeration. Shows superb depth as well as energy on the impressively long finish, which is firmed by youthfully gripping tannins. Drink 2024-2034.

Lots of chocolate and berry with some coffee-bean and vanilla undertones. It’s full and layered with plenty of fruit, round tannins and pleasing complexity of smoked and toasted wood. Tar undertone. Very drinkable now, but better after 2022.

Extremely perfumed with cedar, light mushroom, toffee and plum, following through to a medium to full body with firm, dusty tannins and a long, compact and linear finish. Builds at the end. Real Cannubi magic. Drink after 2026.

Supple, soft, beautiful, pretty, delicious and very unadorned feeling. Very fine. Fresh. A pinosity or grenache-like feel here. Imagine! Red fruited, alpine herbs, fennel, white pepper, soft spice notes. Moreish, delicious and with great energy here. Wonderful expression that has immediate appeal and long term cellaring written all over it.

Very light, raspberry and strawberry, herb, camphor, and almond, almost a light-grenache or alpine Neb quality to this. It’s understated, a wine of delicacy and finesse, sporting ultra-fine dusty tannin, sweetness of fruit with a stony and savoury edge. Bright, succulent and so charming, with a liquorice root aftertaste. It takes a certain level of confidence to make a wine that’s so quiet and nuanced. Old school in the best possible way. Drink 2023 - 2042+.

Cedar and orange peel to the ripe-plum character on the nose. Full-bodied with layers of fine tannins that are nicely interwoven with fruit and chocolate. Flavorful at the end. Just starting to open now. Drink or hold.

Rustic charm here, grippy tannins, black tea, and rose hip tea, yes, and old flowers, clove, some dried meat. Good pucker and chew, dried fruit and nut, blood orange amaro, savouriness, meatiness, cranberry and dried cherry. Wonderful old school expression. Seriously good.

Cherry essence, bit of liquorice root, spice, new leather and game meats. Round feel in the mouth, but still very fine, with a ‘mineral’ feel to acidity and brick dust tannin, some orange peel and dried herb/amaro perfume, plus raw almond grip and flavour as it goes. Juicy and sooty. Lovely wine. Loads of character. Drink 2023 - 2036.
