Launched in 1992, this is one of Poland's super premium brands made exclusively from Stobrawa potatoes, mostly sourced from nearby the distillery to maximise freshness. The vodka is distilled four times following a six century old tradition. Founder and CEO, Tadeusz Dorda sums up the brand's philosophy: "We believe that the definition of vodka – “a flavorless, odorless, neutral spirit without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color” – is simply incorrect. We also reject the popular notion that all vodkas are the same. The flavor profile of our marquee product, Chopin Potato Vodka, is distinctively creamy with earthy notes and sets the standard in its category."

Master Distiller, Waldemar Durakiewicz, has worked with the Dorda family (who still own and run the company) since he graduated from university in 1978. Named after Poland's favourite son, the vodka is packaged in a frosted, cork-finished bottle which has since been copied by the likes of Belvedere Vodka and others.

The first sniffings unearth a soft, slightly sour and vegetal aroma; more time adds minor scents of ash and unsmoked cigarette. The bittersweet palate entry taste flashes on cocoa bean and sap; at midpalate toasty, sooty flavors of tobacco leaf, wood smoke, wood resin and vanilla are found. Ends up semisweet, succulent and roughly spirity. 85-89 points - wineenthusiast.com

“Potato vodkas have never been as well-received as their grain-based competitors, but Chopin—which appeared on the American market in 1997—should go a long way toward changing their lowbrow reputation. It's the smoothest vodka we tried, with a slight oiliness (specific to potato vodkas) that cut beautifully against the briny funk of black caviar and held its own against the thickest black bread I'd been able to find. We found Chopin itself to be 'slightly sweet' and 'well-rounded' with 'perhaps a hint of apple.' Chopin also had a 'medium-length, pleasing burn,' but 'very little aftertaste—it's remarkably clean.' To top it off, Chopin's tall frosted bottle was the prettiest we'd seen...the panel unanimously called Chopin 'far and away the best vodka we tried.” – Alex Abramovich, “Hit me With Your Best Shot”, Slate Magazine, 2004.

Roman Bratasiuk established Clarendon Hills winery in 1989 with a very simple philosophy “to make wines equal to anything in the world”. The phenomenal success of Clarendon Hills has been due to a number of factors, including the age of the vines. Today, much of the fruit is sourced from vines over 70 years old which are grown on a variety of sites which all contribute to the complexity of the wines. Robert Parker has poured great praise on Bratasiuk, with Clarendon Hills being named one of the top wine producers of the year and in 2003 nominated as one of Australia’s and the world's greatest wineries. He described this wine as 'tasting like an Australian version of a great vintage of Lynch Bages.'

A near perfect Cabernet & the star of the 2005 Clarendon Hills Collection

Totally opaque black crimson colour with black crimson hue. Superb nose, with violet and dark chocolate top notes, followed by spice and a hint of cedar. Explosive – totally mouthfilling palate with flavours of vanilla, blackcurrant, black pepper and cassis. Very powerful. Fine grained tannins, perfect balance. Very long aftertaste.

Tasting like an Australian version of a great vintage of Lynch Bages, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Hickinbotham reveals a dense purple color, tremendous intensity, loads of meaty, black currant fruit, and a full-bodied, fabulously endowed, opulent personality. This rich, intense, promising Cabernet should drink well for two decades or more.

This is a restrained, brooding Astralis. Opaque black purple colour with purple hue.  The nose is perfumed with a degree of restraint, only gradually yielding its splendour.  Aroma of liquorice allsorts, blackberry and violet infusions.  The palate is again refined and tight, showing very good complexity but without the explosive power and super concentration that the 2003 delivered.  Flavours of plum, cherry and stewed fruit emerge.  Very fine grained tannins, well balanced to the fruit.  Very long aftertaste of plum, black cherry and stewed fruit.

    Robert Parkers Review:
Clarendon Hills' flagship Syrah is the 800-case cuvee of 2004 Syrah Astralis Vineyard. One of Australia's most prodigious offerings, Astralis is a 20-30-year wine (some of the early vintages, such as 1996, are still babies in their evolutionary progression). Produced from 75-year-old Syrah vines, it coats the mouth with a viscous texture, but never comes across as heavy or over the top. An opaque purple color is followed by an extraordinary nose of graphite, roasted meat, new saddle leather, truffles, violets, and blackberries. Full-bodied with superb purity, great definition, and a refreshing, zesty acidity that buttresses its enormous weight and richness, it is a tour de force in winemaking from Roman Bratasiuk. A magnificent Grenache and the pick of the set.  This is what Clarendon Hills is about - concentration, power and a sensational drinking experience.  Opaque black crimson colour with deep black crimson mauve hue.  Superb, lifted nose of violets and raspberry followed by spice, blackberry juice and vanilla.  Velvet smooth palate structure, with magnificent power - flavours of white pepper, blood plum and raspberry concentrate.  Strong re-emergence of white pepper on the back palate.  Great length and depth.

    Robert Parkers Review:
The top Grenache cuvee (essentially a selection of the finest fruit from the Blewitt Springs vineyard) is the 2004 Grenache Old Vines Romas Vineyard. Cropped at 1/2 ton of fruit per acre, it boasts a deep ruby color, fabulous density, and a big, earthy bouquet of loamy soil, minerals, black raspberries, kirsch liqueur, flowers, and spice box. With great intensity as well as purity, and an expansive, savory mouthfeel, it is a fabulous offering to drink over the next 10-12 years.

The Hickinbotham Vineyard is a relatively large Commercial vineyard that is situated in the Clarendon Hill region. The owners of the vineyard manage the operation according to the needs of their various clients which involve some of Australia’s big companies, such as Hardys and Penfolds. The original 1965 plantings are managed as a super premium vineyard, with the vines being planted on hard clay and ironstone soils. The vines are close planted, which forces each plant to compete for the available moisture and nutrients. Roman pays top dollar for his grapes from this vineyard, thus ensuring to get the quality he wants, and furthermore, pays for his own picking costs.

Totally opaque black purple colour. The intensity of the nose increases a notch and one can only wonder of what more could be expected from the following wine. Liquorice, blackberry juice, violets and liquorice allsorts fill the nose. The palate weight expresses even more flamboyance than the Liandra, making the Rubens look a little on the slim side – this wine is a sophisticated Magdelanian Venus (look up your early History of Mankind textbooks for that one!) Explosive flavours of white and black pepper, violet infusions, blackberry and spice. Perfectly balanced tannins, followed by an exceptionally long black pepper, blackberry aftertaste.

The 2003 Syrah Hickinbotham Vineyard is a prodigious effort. With fabulous notes of melted licorice, smoke, asphalt, creme de cassis, and roasted jus de viande, this full-bodied, dense yet remarkably elegant, well-balanced Syrah should hit its peak in 2-3 years, and last for 15+.

This is the wine that Roman refers to as ‘My Latour’ and is not afraid to draw parallels and even admit that is where the inspiration came from. This is the biggest Cabernet – a wine of monumental structure yet displaying a degree of flamboyance.

Tasting Note: Opaque black crimson colour with deep crimson hue. The nose is relatively tight, but that is almost expected of this wine. Notes of violets and blackcurrant emerge over a subtle spice end note. The palate takes one by surprise, it’s far from being tightly knit, and is explosive with flavour and delivers exceptional length and depth. Flavours of blackcurrant, blackpepper and spice are enhanced by a hint of confectionary and fine dry tannins. Perfect balance, with exceptionally long aftertaste of blackcurrant, blackpepper and spice.

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Hickinbotham Vineyard may be the finest Cabernet I have yet tasted from Clarendon Hills. While stunning from barrel, it is even more prodigious from bottle. An explosive bouquet of creme de cassis, melted licorice, new saddle leather, cedar, and Asian spices is followed by a full-bodied, marvelously concentrated effort that tastes like an Australian version of the profound 1990 Lynch Bages. Huge, concentrated flavors inundate the palate. The wine is seamlessly constructed with a brilliant integration of acidity, tannin, and wood. This fabulous, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon should be at its finest between 2008-2020+.

The Piggott Range Vineyard is an expression of the capacity of a vine to survive in adverse conditions. The vines are around 30 years old and planted on rock and shale with only 10-13 mm of top soil. In normal years the yields are around 1 tonne per acre. In 2003 the result was a miniscule ½ tonne per acre of which can only be described as concentrate. The site is subject to bad weather around flowering giving the vine a poor fruit set.

The wine is totally black in colour. The nose is even more pronounced than that of Brookman. Lifted notes of blackberry concentrate, plum concentrate, spice, violets and liquorice. The structure is magnificent – monumental with very highly wound tannin structure. Fine, dry – a formidable backbone to a concentrate of black pepper and blackberry flavours. As in previous vintages this wine is concentration plus, yet still in balance. One could cut the wine with a 50/50 shandy of water and still have a decent drink.

    Alc/Vol: 14.8%

    Robert Parker's Review
From rocky shale/slate soils, the 2003 Syrah Piggott Range should only be purchased by patient consumers. Possessing enormous structure, but also magnificent extract and richness, it offers up aromas of crushed minerals, flowers, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, and pepper. Medium to full-bodied, dense flavors reveal striking elegance as well as balance. There is plenty of tannin lurking under the surface, so I suspect it will need 4-5 years of cellaring. It should keep for 20-25 years. The distinctive roasted character of the Piggott Range Syrahs is noteworthy since this vineyard is a natural amphitheater planted with 35- to 40-year-old Syrah vines.

The Moritz Vineyard is relatively young by Clarendon Hills standards. The vines are approximately 30 years old, producing yields of around 2.5 tonnes per acre. The oak regime has changed in order to produce a seamless wine. In the 2001 vintage, 70% new French oak was used together with 30% 1 year old French oak. The 2003 Moritz has been matured in 50% 1 year old oak, 25% 2 year old and 25% 3 year old French oak. This reflects the basic qualities of the fruit.

Totally opaque black purple colour. Superb, perfumed nose of violets, blackberry, black pepper, cedar and spice. The palate displays a seamless quality with perfect integration of components due to a combination of oak types and fruit quality. The palate delivers outstanding length and depth with seamless flavours of violet infusions, blackberry, plum, cedar, white and black pepper. Velvet smooth tannins with exceptionally long aftertaste of spice, plum and black pepper.

The 2003 Syrah Moritz Vineyard is characterized by its extraordinary balance and purity. This saturated ruby/purple-colored, elegant Syrah offers up sweet aromas of black fruits, flowers, espresso, and white chocolate. Rich, long, velvety-textured, and well-balanced, it should drink well young, hit its peak in 5-7 years, and last for 15-16.

The Hickinbotham vineyard Syrah was planted in 1965 on hard clay and ironstone soil. The vines are close planted at one metre spacing, which forces the vine roots to compete for ground water. Consequently producing small highly concentrated berries.

“Who needs Viognier, when Syrah from this vineyard has a perfumed intensity without it!” This wine clearly demonstrates Roman’s winemaking philosophy.

Tasting Note: Totally opaque black/purple colour. Magnificent perfumed nose, filled with the aroma of violets, blackberry concentrate and blackpepper with exotic end notes. The palate is an explosion of super ripe fruit, yet far from simple layers. At first the flavours are recognised, and quickly merge into a seamless expression of Shiraz. Flavours of blackberry and blackpepper, plum and spice create the land of fruit bomb that only great Australian Shiraz is capable of achieving. Fine, firm tannin structure, yet perfectly balanced followed by a profoundly long aftertaste of blackberry, plum and blackpepper. Can a wine get much better than this?

The 2002 vintage was uniform across the Clarendon Hills range, with all wines performing superbly. The wine differs from the 2001 in that only two new barriques were used whereas 100% new oak was used the previous year. This wine differs from the previous vintage in body weight and structure. 2001 Astralis was comparable to Penfolds Grange – a monumental concentrated Shiraz. The 2002 Astralis is comparable to a Henschke Hill of Grace. The difference in style is attributable to the climatic variation due to the vintage.

Tasting Note: Totally black purple colour. Superb lifted nose of violets, leather, blackcurrant and spice. The palate structure is very reminiscent of Henschke Hill of Grace with a sophistication and elegance that is rare in Australian wine. The vintage yielded crops of ½ to 1 tonne per acre, compared with 2 to 2 ½ tonnes in the previous year. The wine is still very voluptuous on the palate with concentrated powerful flavours of plum, spice, anise and white pepper very evident. Fine grained tannins with an exceptionally long aftertaste of plum, spice and white pepper. An exceptional red that continued to blossom in the glass. Bratasiuk draws parallels of this wine to the 1992, and just to demonstrate the parallels, he opened a bottle of the 1992.

    Robert Parker's Review
The 2002 Syrah Astralis Vineyard rivals the greatest wines Roman Bratasiuk has made in his 15-year career. This compelling, black/blue-hued offering from 75-year-old Syrah vines tastes like blood of the vine. An extraordinary perfume of flowers, creme de cassis, blackberries, roasted meat, new saddle leather, and earth is followed by a wine with sweet tannin, sensational concentration, full body, an unctuous texture, and a full-throttle, tannic finish. Yet it reveals unbelievable elegance and finesse. Too many Euro-centric elitists argue that Australian wines are too rich and over the top, but all of these offerings have been made by someone with great talent and vision who takes the extraordinary ripeness and purity of fruit available from these old vine vineyards and crafts them into wines that are quite European in style ... just richer and denser. The 2002 Astralis is a tour de force. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025+.

“This is My ‘Latour’”, beams Roman, and indeed this is a formidable wine, and on a relative basis, an absolute bargain. The 2000 Chateau Latour, (from a comparable great year), was priced at around A$700 a bottle on the early futures market. Is the pleasure of a bottle of Latour as a good as the pleasure from nearly a dozen bottles of 2001Clarendon Hills Cabernet? Certainly Clarendon Hills does not have First Growth status, but on a quality basis Roman over delivers.

Tasting Note: Totally opaque black crimson colour. Magnificent aroma of liquorice allsorts, blackcurrant, spice, cedar and violets. The palate is a powerhouse of Cabernet flavour and has a richness and depth that the previous two Cabernets don’t have. A “ supersaturated” wine. The alcohol is 14.5%, reflecting the fact that this is the last block of Cabernet to be picked. There is monumental power and structure, with voluptuous blackcurrant, and spice flavours filling every corner of the palate. Layers of confectionary and cedar are enhanced by the re occurring violet character. Very fine, very firm dry tannins, perfectly balanced, with a long powerful aftertaste of cedar and blackcurrant.

Outstanding colour extraction! Black purple colour with purple hue. The nose is a touch subdued, but reveals aroma of violets, liquorice and blood plum followed by a touch of raspberry and soy. The palate is relatively tight, much more tightly knit than previous vintages from the same vineyard. The grapes for this wine were picked in 4 sessions over a two week period. Bratasiuk flavour profiles his vineyard, as well as paying attention to the ‘numbers’ that evolve from fluid testing.

Flavours of liquorice, plum and violet emerge followed by a white pepper back palate and a warm spicy sensation. The tannin structure is fine, much drier than the previous wines, however perfectly balanced with exceptionally long spicy, plum and white pepper aftertaste.

The Blewitt Springs Vineyard is the original source of Grenache for Clarendon Hills and has traditionally being referred to as the Dolly Parton of the Clarendon Hills Grenache collection. It was certainly the case before the extraordinary Kangarilla Grenache appeared. The 2001 vintage conditions were amongst the hottest experienced at Clarendon Hills and the Grenache thrived. Cropped at around 2 tonnes per acre the wine has been made and handled in the same way as the previous Grenaches in the collection.

Tasting Note: The colour of this wine is fantastic with very deep crimson mauve purple clinging to the glass. The nose is a touch subdued, but as with the other Grenache wines it has recently been moved from barrel to tank awaiting bottling. The nose displays spicy notes followed by hints of pepper, raspberry and earth. The palate flavours explode in the mouth displaying powerful Clarendon Hills concentration of flavour. The flavour profile is almost Shiraz like, except that voluptuous raspberry flavours are evident. The liquorice, blackpepper and spice back palate flavours are outstanding and have remarkable persistence. The palate weight does not quite match the Kangarilla Grenache, on a comparative basis, however that’s nothing to despair about. Fine grained, perfectly balanced tannins with exceptionally long blackpepper, spice aftertaste.

Robert Parker has gone into raptures about this wine and it’s easy to see why. The wine is an explosion of flavour, and has a degree of voluptuousness about it that is rarely found in any wine. If Dolly Parton, on a scale of one to ten, is rated a ten for size, then this wine has to be a fourteen or fifteen out of ten! The concentration of flavour in this wine is incomprehensible for Grenache and is more Shiraz like in it’s weight & structure yet it retains very strong pure Grenache flavours.

Tasting Note: Very deep crimson mauve purple colour, vibrant with youth. The wine is already perfumed despite the wine only recently being moved from cask to blending tank. Superb aroma of violets, raspberry and liquorice. The palate flavour explosion is unexpected from the nose and instantly encases every corner of the mouth with superbly ripe fruit. The texture is luscious, salivating with flavours of blackpepper, liquorice and spice – a total concentrate which hangs onto the back palate and refuses to be moved – it just stays and stays. The tannins are velvet smooth and in perfect harmony with the voluptuous fruit flavours. The wine is a wonderful expression of the vineyard creating a sense of purity of style that is going to be difficult to replicate in the following two wines – well at this point in the tasting that is the impression.

2003 Clarendon Hills Romas Vineyard Old Vines Grenache Magnum (1500ml)
    Clarendon, South Australia, AUSTRALIA

    $3588.00 Dozen
    Cellar: 10 - 12 Years (2014-2016)
    ABV: 14.8%
    Closure: Cork

The Romas Vineyard delivers the high point of Clarendon Hills Grenache, which produces tiny yields of between ½ to 1 tonne per acre. In the past the Romas has been the most voluptuous expression of Grenache, however, in 2003 the wine is much tighter and closed than the Romas’ of 2001 and 2002. For the first 9 months of its life the wine was extremely closed – giving Roman some concern, however, slowly, very slowly the wine is evolving. This wine is going to take some time to fully express itself.

The colour is outstanding with purple crimson colour and deep mauve hue. The nose gives no indication of the tight knit structure that is to follow, with superb lift of violets and spice. The tannin backbone is very assertive in this wine but necessary to support the fruit. Flavours of liquorice allsorts, confectionary and white pepper with hints of raspberry and plum. A Grenache of formidable structure that will need at least 10-12 years to evolve.
    Cellar 10-12 years (2014-2016)

    Robert Parker's Review
Clarendon Hills’ flagship Grenache, the 2003 Grenache Old Vines Romas Vineyard is the densest, most exotic of these wines. Produced from a parcel of vines (65-80-years old) in the highest section of the Blewitt Springs Vineyard, it boasts a dense ruby/plum color, a raspberry and blackberry-scented perfume with hints of underbrush, incense, and camphor, an unctuously textured mouthfeel, marvelous elegance, and an incredibly intoxicating personality. Rich and dense, it will benefit from 1-3 years of bottle age, and should last for 12-15 years.

The high point of Clarendon Hills winemaking. Totally opaque black crimson colour with black crimson hue. Perfumed nose of mocha, dark chocolate, violets and spice. The palate has that powerful Astralis quality, but is more elegant than examples from past vintages. Full bodied with flavours of vanilla, mocha, blackberry and dark chocolate, followed by a black pepper back palate. Mouthfilling. Fine grained tannins. Very spicy black pepper aftertaste.

A great classic, the inky/purple-colored 2005 Syrah Astralis is a 40-50 year effort. Although closed, it displays gorgeous but subtle notes of smoked meats, black currants, graphite, new saddle leather, truffles, and blackberries. Remarkably elegant for a wine of such power and intensity, this complex, rich, full-bodied, backward Syrah has totally absorbed its aging in 100% French oak, and appears set for a long life. If you plan on drinking it over the next 4-5 years, it will need 24 hours of decanting. It should be at its finest between 2012-2035.

Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate

At the top of the pyramid is the 2005 Syrah Astralis Vineyard. It is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1920 and is one of the Syrah cuvees in which 100% new oak is utilized (along with Brookman, Hickinbotham, and Piggott Range). It delivers an ethereal bouquet of smoky oak, violets, espresso, black pepper, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Densely packed and tightly wound, all it needs is time. The wine is totally harmonious, impeccably balanced, and exceptionally long. When it fully unwinds, even my high rating will appear conservative. Its only competition comes from the likes of Guigal, Chapoutier, Chave, Krankl, and Ringland.

The Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is produced from a small four acre single vineyard planted in 1919. The yields from these old vines are typically around half tonne per acre. The use of chemicals and fertilizers is minimised and the vineyard is pruned and harvested by hand. The first vintage of Coriole Lloyd Shiraz was produced in 1989, and has been made every year since with the exception of 2003. The 2002 vintage in McLaren Vale was exceptional despite lower yields than average due to the coolest summer on record. Since the 1999 vintage there’s been a gradual shift away from the use of 100% American oak, the 2002 vintage was produced with a combination of 85% French oak and 15% American oak. In fact the American oak component was actually purchased from French coopers, the winery believing the French are much better coopers than the Americans! Matured for a period of 18 months in oak hogsheads, the wine is then given a further 12 months bottle age before being released.

Coriole Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is sourced from low yielding estate grown, 80 year old vines. The wine is fermented in old open fermenters and hand plunged, breaking the cap. It is then pressed into both new and old French and American oak barriques and hogsheads where it is matured for 15 months.

A magnificent wine, tightly structured and needing considerable cellaring to fully integrate. Totally opaque black crimson colour with black crimson hue. Aroma of dark chocolate, vanilla and spice followed by liquorice end notes. The palate has a monumental structure. Mouthfilling with a great deal of ripe fruit worked over a firm tannin backbone. Flavours of spice, blackberry, plum and black pepper are juxtaposed by a firmish tannin grip. This is not the sort of wine one comes across often, as most reds these days seem to be destined for the table much sooner than later.

One of this estate’s flagship wines, the 2003 The Dead Arm Shiraz appears to be better than the 2002. A deeper, richer, fuller-bodied offering that spent time in equal parts French and American oak, it possesses an opaque purple color, great intensity, and a fabulously sweet nose of blackberries, cassis, asphalt, earth, and oak. Powerful, super-concentrated, and obviously fashioned from low yields and old vines, this is a classic McLaren Vale old vine Shiraz that should age nicely for 15+ years.

Flirting with perfection, the 2010 Cote Rotie La Landonne offers up scents of black truffles, incense, smoked game, creosote, spring flowers and black fruits. Full-bodied with mouth-staining tannin as well as mouth-saturating extract and richness, this powerful, strikingly intense 2010 is young and unevolved, but it is filled with potential. Interestingly, Jacques Grange told me this cuvee was made from 100% destemmed fruit. Forget this wine for 4-5 years, and drink it over the following three decades.

The 2004 vintage was defined by the dry heat experienced in the Champagne region over the final weeks before harvest, contributing to wonderful ripeness in the grapes. According to Chef de Cave, Richard Geoffroy,"...growing and fruit ripening periods went by smoothly, with no difficulties - a phenomenon that we have rarely, if ever, seen before".

The 2004 Dom Perignon pours well opening with a frothy white mousse that shows excellent hold. Once dissipated it reveals a base wine colour of pale straw with a very profuse and exceptionally fine bead. Nosing provides a classic, refined Champagne sniff showing excellent intensity. Aromas of baked bread, yeast lees and cashew are followed by some subtle toastiness with some citrus end notes. Elegant and refined the palate has a flavour profile of toasty baked bread and yeast lees followed by some subtle nutty hazelnut and citrus. Clean crisp dry finish but quite creamy in mouthfeel with long persistent aftertaste of toasty yeast lees, brioche and subtle hazelnut. Enjoy it as often as you can afford to!

The 2004 Dom Pérignon continues to develop beautifully. A vibrant, focused Champagne, the 2004 clearly reflects the personality of the year. Freshly cut flowers, white peaches and pears are woven together in a Champagne that impresses for its focus and energy. Chiseled saline note support the crystalline finish. I imagine the 2004 will always remain relatively bright and linear, but at the same time, each time I have tasted it over the last two years the 2004 seems to have a little more body and broader shoulders. The 2004 will appeal most to readers who find the 2002 and 2003 too exuberant. There is a lot to like in the glass.

'A short name for the largest (by far) of the deluxe cuvees, with an unknown (but huge) number of components adding up to 52% pinot noir and 48% chardonnay. Free of taint, it sends shivers up the spine, shimmering in its purity and intensity, lemon citrus the first and last flavours, with nectarine, pear and spice on the mid-palate'

A fine lacy white mousse has good buoyancy over a pale straw coloured base. Exceptionally delicate and very steady bead. Very complex and refined the nose features citrus and toast top notes over yeast lees, hints of green apple, brioche and almond. Sophisticated and powerful, the toned, tightly sculptured palate features driving citrus, baked bread, yeast lees, almond, subtlety toasted biscuit, brioche, smoky mineral, and oyster shell like flavours. Dry racy finish with crisp acidity and an airy yet tense feel. Concludes very long and finessed. Still remarkably young and virile, some bottle age will reap great rewards.

The 2008 Dom Pérignon is the first time the estate has released a wine out of order (the 2009 was released before the 2008) but the estate loved the wine so much they felt it warranted additional aging. This is a rich, powerful wine that still shows incredible purity and elegance, with a stacked, concentrated feel on the palate. It’s rare to find such a mix of ripe, pure, concentrated fruit paired with this level of purity, focus, and precision. This is a legendary Dom that surpasses all the great vintages of Dom I have experience with, including the 1990, 1996, and 2002. Drink 2018-2038.

The 2008 Dom Pérignon is fabulous, but quite remarkably, it was even more open when I tasted it a year ago. Bright, focused and crystalline in its precision, the 2008 is going to need a number of years before it is at its best. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper give the 2008 its chiseled, bright profile. Several recent bottles have all been magnificent. What I admire most about the 2008 is the way it shows all the focus, translucence and energy that is such a signature of the year, and yet it is also remarkably deep and vertical. In other words, the 2008 is a Champagne that plays in three dimensions. Drink 2020-2058.

There's power to this graceful Champagne, with the vivid acidity swathed in a fine, creamy mousse and flavors of toasted brioche, kumquat, pastry cream, candied ginger and poached plum that dance across the palate. An underpinning of smoky mineral gains momentum on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2033.

The finest release of this iconic cuvée since the 1996 vintage, the 2008 Dom Pérignon wafts from the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of Meyer lemon, green apple, dried white flowers and oyster shell, with only subtle hints of the smoky, autolytic aromas that have been such a prominent signature of recent releases. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, its notable flesh and amplitude controlled by incisive acids, with a youthfully exuberant but elegant mousse and a long, beautifully delineated finish. Considering the sheer size of this cuvée, it's a remarkable achievement and a fitting release with which to conclude Richard Geoffroy's tenure as chef de cave. Given the 2008's intensity and balance, I suspect purists will be anticipating later disgorgements with lower dosage and more time on the lees with particular enthusiasm. Tasted three times, with consistent results. Drink 2018-2040.

Seven champagnes were submitted for this tasting at prices significantly higher than this great wine. It’s a simple outcome of supply and demand, for Dom’s production is measured in millions of bottles each year. There are often several vintages on sale, none better than this vibrant, elegant, incredibly youthful 2008.

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo (the first made since 2003) is a whopper! Slightly less potent alcohol-wise than the 1998 or 2003, Laurence Feraud compares it to the 2000. With just under 16% natural alcohol, it exhibits a dense purple color along with a big, sweet kiss of charcoal, grilled steaks, beef blood, plums, blackberries, smoked herbs, kirsch, and black currants, fabulous concentration, enormous body, and a finish that lasts over a minute. There is a freshness and vibrancy because of the vintage’s crisp acid levels, and the wine should age well for 30+ years. It reminded me more of the 1998 at a similar stage than the 2000, but that’s splitting hairs given the quality level of this offering. Normally there are 500-600 cases produced, most of it being available through the grey market rather than through any authorized importers. Laurence told me the Capo will be bottled in February, 2010.

Grapes for Domaine du Pegau Cuvee da Capo come from the oldest on the property, most over 100 years of age. The blend today is approximately 70% Grenache, along with Syrah and Mourvedre, with the remainder from the various other red grapes that are allowed to be planted in the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation. As a tiny 500 case per year production, Cuvee da Capo is one of the most expensive and in demand wines in the entire Rhone appellation.
Dense black as night colour with a deep dark red black hue. Potent ripe black cherry, liquorice, blackberry and black raspberry scents waft through the olfactory senses complexed by elements of scorched earth, hints of new leather, dried herbs and peppered meats. The monster sized palate is epically rich and boasts an out of this world level of concentration with decadent black raspberry, black cherry and liquorice fruits completely saturating every corner of the mouth. A firm robust tannin structure imparts some chewiness to what is otherwise an opulent textural feel. Elements of scorched earth, dried herbs, infusions of incense, spicy dried meats and pepper chime in on the back half. Incredibly expansive and powerful with a finish that lingers on the palate for minutes.
Drink over the next 10-15 years.

As impressive as the Cuvée Réservée is, the 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée da Capo brings an extra level of intensity. Turn that volume up to 11 or even 12. Waves of black cherries, plums and chocolate wash across the full-bodied, velvety palate, lingering nearly forever on the finish. As big and bold as it is, it remains breathtakingly elegant and fine. It should evolve gracefully through at least 2040. Drink 2022-2040.

I was also able to taste the 2016 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Da Capo, which comes mostly from older vines in the La Crau lieu-dit and spends an additional year in a large foudre. The 2016 vintage was truly magical for the region, and this Cuvée Da Capo is unquestionably one of the finest vintages for this cuvée ever made, in the same league as, if not surpassing, the 1998, 2003, 2007, and 2010. Sensational notes of cured meats, crème de cassis, crushed violets, ground pepper, tapenade, truffle, and sweet herbes de Provence all soar from the glass and it hits the palate with a massive, full-bodied style that stays seamless, weightless, and as pure as they come. Traditional, classic Châteauneuf Du Pape doesn’t get better. I hate to be the guy who throws out the “best to date” line very often, but this is truly magical stuff. Drink 2023-2048.

Vivid ruby. Intensely perfumed dark berry, cherry preserve and licorice aromas are complemented by hints of game, exotic spices and candied lavender. Deep, sweet and expansive on the palate, offering densely packed raspberry, cola and floral pastille flavors and a strong suggestion of spicecake. Shows superb clarity and power on a ridiculously long, sappy finish that eventually leaves behind cherry liqueur and bitter chocolate notes.

Every year that I've tried the 2016 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée, I've liked it better than the year before, so I've gone ahead and peremptorily added the + sign to this year's rating. Black cherries and licorice pick up a hint of chocolate in this full-bodied, rich, velvety wine that should evolve nicely for at least 12-15 years.

Deep ruby. Assertive aromas of black raspberry, potpourri and spicecake pick up a bright mineral nuance and a hint of cured meat with air. Juicy and impressively concentrated, showing real energy and spicy lift to the sappy red berry, bitter cherry, spicecake and floral pastille flavors. Fine-grained tannins build on the finish, adding shape and grip to lingering, spice-accented raspberry liqueur, smoked meat and licorice flavors.

Reminding me of a fresher version of the 2003, the 2016 Chateauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Reservée is another magical wine from Laurence Feraud that could come from nowhere else. I still remember tasting (and loving) this beauty from barrel. It doesn’t quite have the sheer over-the-top decadence of the 2003, but it does have more elegance, while not giving up an inch with regard to texture and opulence. Dark ruby/plum-hued with a monster display of Provençal goodness in its garrigue, lavender, violets, kirsch, plums, and Asian spices, this full-throttle, ripe, sexy Châteauneuf du Pape has silky tannins, flawless balance, and a heavenly texture. It’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and drink well for at least 20-25 years.

Even though technology has invaded many wineries in the Rhone, Laurence Feraud and her father Paul, of Domaine Pegau have earned a reputation as 'Traditionalists'. The Cuvee Reservee is an illustration of just this stance. Hand harvest and hand sorting, no destemming and the different varietals of the cuvee co fermented together by indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks without temperature control.

Laurence Feraud's influence on the estate is increasingly palpable, however there is no doubt that Paul stays on as the inspiration for everything that happens in the vineyards and winery. All up, it makes for a winning father and daughter team that Chateauneuf fans can embrace.

The 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Réservée hits the standard assemblage: 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and 10% "others." Still in cask at the time of my visit, it has expressive floral and garrigue notes, plus hints of star anise layered over a base of black cherries. Full-bodied, deep and rich, this looks like a vintage to set aside for a while, with at least 15 years of longevity ahead of it.

Deep shimmering ruby. A highly perfumed nose displays scents of ripe red and dark berries, candied lavender, licorice, smoked meat and white pepper, and a building mineral overtone adds vivacity. Juicy and deeply concentrated yet lively as well, offering alluringly sweet cherry, black raspberry, spicecake and floral pastille flavors that spread out and become livelier with aeration. Closes youthfully chewy, sweet and extremely long, with slow-building tannins adding shape and solid grip. There's no Cuvée Da Capo in 2017, incidentally.

Not yet bottled, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Réservée is a normal blend of 80% Grenache, 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre, and the rest assorted varieties (not destemmed), brought up all in foudre and old barrels. It has classic Pégau notes of ground pepper, earth, meat, truffle, and blackcurrants as well as medium to full body, good density, building tannins, and a great finish. Laurence compared this vintage to 2005, but I think this 2017 has more density and flesh. It’s a beautiful, classic Pégau that reminds me a slightly toned down 2009.

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee, still aging in foudres, was tasted from different lots. The most promising wine made here since the 2003, it is a full-bodied effort revealing dense, concentrated fruit, and high tannins that still need to be resolved. It will require some bottle age to round into drinking shape. The color is a dense plum/purple, and the wine shows considerable licorice, lavender, roasted herb, and meat juice characteristics, as well as a texture of beef blood – no doubt attributable to the old vines from which it is made. The fruit dominates, and the wine is intense, rich, and full-bodied. It will undoubtedly need 3-4 years of bottle age after its release, and should last 20-25 years based on the fact that their older vintages (i.e., 1979, 1981, 1983, and 1985) are all still in terrific condition.

Other reviews... The monumental 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Pure is a candidate for perfection after several more years of bottle age. It boasts an inky/ruby/purple color with extraordinary “purity,” along with notes of spring flowers, luxurious levels of black raspberry and kirsch liqueur, licorice and mulberries. Layers of flavor hit the palate with exceptional freshness and definition as well as teeth-rattling intensity and power. This extraordinary tour de force is one of the greatest wines made in the world today. It should evolve easily for 15-20+ years. I have no idea what the alcohol levels are in these cuvees, but I’m sure they are pushing 16% or more. This is a legendary wine!

The brilliant Julien Barrot has decided to produce only two cuvees of Chateauneuf du Pape from the family’s nearly 32 acres of vineyards. It is amazing what Julien has accomplished since he began working at Domaine La Barroche in deluge-plagued 2002, the year when historical floods inundated Chateauneuf du Pape on September 8 and 9. The water could not have come at a worse time since prior to that it appeared to be a superb harvest. The first great vintage produced by Barrot was 2005, and he has continued with a remarkable succession of riveting wines. One of the world’s greatest red wines is his 300 or so cases of Pure that come from a lieu-dit called Grand Pierre next to the famed Chateau Rayas. The two cuvees called Signature and Terroir are now combined into one simply called Chateauneuf du Pape (the name may change in the future). It includes an intriguing component of less than 10% 70-year-old Cinsault, which gives the wine an extraordinary fragrance as well as a delicacy that can be missing in these southern Rhone wines. The Pure is 100% Grenache from 105-year-old vines.

Translucent pink tinged colour. Nosing offers up elevated aromatics of peach, strawberry and blood orange with back notes of wet stone and a saline like minerality. Intense, elegant, racy and supplely textured all at once, the beautifully detailed palate features spicy peach, strawberry and mouth watering blood orange fruits over a back drop of river stones and an oyster shell like minerality. Finishes dry with zesty acidity and a long, round, deliciously fruited aftertaste.

Not included in the blind tasting at the local syndicat, Tempier's 2021 Bandol Rose nevertheless looked good when I tasted it at the estate.
