2019 Bordeaux Pre-Arrival

What a time to be releasing Bordeaux futures! And it's not just the current COVID-19 upheaval, the major markets for Bordeaux have perhaps greater challenges with continued unrest in Hong Kong, Brexit in the UK, and additional tariffs for imported wine in the US. However, initial reports and offerings show the Bordelais may just get this campaign right with pricing. Couple this with the outstanding quality of the vintage and this is shaping up as the year to buy.

"the wines I have tasted so far from 2019 seem good to excellent and comparable in quality to 2018, 2016 and 2015 – all excellent vintages." - James Suckling

And 2019 is certainly another excellent year in Bordeaux. Not only is quality uniform and homogenous, the wines are classic in style with bright fruit and well balanced acidity and tannins. Alcohol levels are more moderate than other top years, while the wines still have notable intensity. James Suckling sums it up "comparing 2019 to the great 2010 vintage but without the austerity and intensity. Some say 2019 is close to the excellent 2016 vintage but with perhaps slightly less tannin concentration." Likewise veteran consultant Michel Rolland says "The wines of 2019 compared to 2018 are a little like how 2016 was to 2015 and 2010 was to 2009”.

Rich plum colour. This takes its time to open, is pretty subtle at first, but then explodes in juicy fruit. Clear salinity where you can feel the slate scrape of the limestone terroir, alongside well expressed aromatics with touches of peony flowers. Elegant and succulent. Second vintage with Jean de Cournuaud as technical director. A yield of 46hl/ha. 65% new oak, with a mix of barrels and 20hl casks. 3.77pH. Harvest 18-21 September, with all the Merlots in 3.5 days instead of the usual 11 days (and in fact stretched over one month in 2018), with just 20 minutes from picking to vat. 2019 Chateau Beausejour Duffau-Lagarrosse Pre-Arrival Offer

Composed of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) was harvested from the 24th of September to the 7th of October. Yields were 45 hectoliters per hectare this year with about 60% of production going into the grand vin. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is deceptively forward to begin, giving a wonderful intensity of Morello cherries, wild blueberries and boysenberries scents, soon unfurling to reveal more and more layers: pencil lead, cast-iron pan, wilted roses, oolong tea and charcoal with a hint of garrigue. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with energetic, crunchy black fruits, framed by firm, grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing very long and minerally. If this delivers on its promise, it should be very long-lived indeed! About 2,000 cases are anticipated to be made.

The 2019 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is shaping up to be magnificent. A wine of tremendous breadth and power, the 2019 has so much to offer. An infusion of scorched earth, gravel, spice, menthol and blackberry makes a strong first impression. Virile and potent, the 2019 offers remarkable persistence and yet retains quite a bit of finesse, especially given its size. The tannins are there, but they are matched by the intensity of the fruit. This is one of the most impressive wines of the year in the early going. Tasted two times.
    95-97 points
    Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau-Lagarrosse is endowed with precocious black cherries, kirsch and blueberry on the nose. Just a hint of menthol emerges with several minutes' aeration. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine precision, detailed and tensile with real quality stacked up towards the mineral-driven, lightly spiced and sophisticated finish. This year, it might just be pipped by Pavie Macquin, another Saint-Émilion managed by Nicolas Thienpont, nevertheless this has great potential and it should cellar for 30-40 years.

    Neal Martin - Vinous

A smooth red, showing richness and strength. Blackberries, blueberries, hazelnuts and morel mushrooms. Full body and fine tannins. Solid length.

    James Suckling

Another stunning vintage from this brilliant estate that is just delivering hit after hit. Concentration and intensity right from the initial aromatics, damson, cassis and blackberry fruits that you could almost drink now until the tannins build up across the palate and remind you that this is built to last. Velvety texture, black chocolate and crushed stone minerality on the finish. One of the wines of the vintage. Tasted twice, one week apart. 60% 1st wine. A yield of 45hl/ha.

    Jane Anson - Decanter

Deep in color, this is beautiful from start to finish. Elegant, full-bodied, sensual, sexy, fresh and sweet, there is ample concentration and length here. The fruit is ripe and clean with a fabulous sense of purity in its essence. The finish holds your attention, making you want to take another swirl, sniff and sip to see what else you can find here. The wine is made from blending 86% Merlot with 14% Cabernet Franc. The harvest took place September 24-October 7. The production is well above last year with close to 2,000 cases produced. This is one of the stars of the vintage.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Belair Monange comes sashaying out of the glass with a graceful hair-toss of fragrant red roses, cinnamon stick, cardamom and cumin seed notes over a core of Morello cherries, dark chocolate, wild blueberries and blackberry pie plus a touch of pencil shavings. The medium to full-bodied palate is just scrumptious, offering layers of perfumed black fruits and bright floral sparks, framed by exquisitely ripe, satiny tannins and an invigorating line of freshness, finishing on a lingering aniseed note.
      96-98 points
      Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (Jun 2020)

The 2019 Bélair-Monange, currently undergoing extensive renovation, was picked from 19 September to 3 October and matured in 50% new oak. It certainly leans upon red fruit on the nose with vivacious wild strawberry, cranberry and Morello scents, wonderful mineralité emerging with aeration. This really repays patience. Monitoring it over an hour it uncovers more black fruit - keeps you on your toes. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins and a sensual silky texture that belies the sheer depth of this Saint-Émilion. It fans out with abandon on the finish - just an outstanding wine that will offer drinkers many years of pleasure.

Tight and minerally with tar, currant, and wet-earth aromas and flavors. Medium-to full-bodied. Some salt and white pepper to the black fruit. Black olives, too.
      96-97 points
      James Suckling

The 2019 Belair-Monange is beautiful and reminds me slightly of the 2016 with its fresh yet concentrated style. Offering lots of black fruits, scorched earth, truffle, lead pencil, and a liquid rock-like minerality, this full-bodied beauty has a solid spine of acidity, beautiful balance, and enough building tannins to warrant a solid 5-7 years of bottle age.
      96-98 points
      Jeb Dunnuck

Floral in nature, you also find smoke, incense, red fruits, spice box, rocks, stones and oceanic notes in the perfume. The wine is rich, concentrated, fresh, vibrant and silky. The fruits glide across your palate leaving a trail of sweet cherries, salt and plums that hang with you.

The 2019 Bellefont-Belcier is a promising wine. The bruising tannins that were once found in these wines appear, thankfully, to be rather tamed in the 2019. At the same time, there is plenty of the virile power that makes this Saint-Émilion so distinctive. Black fruit, graphite, spice, leather and incense all build into the hulking finish.
      92-94 points
      Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Bellefont-Belcier is inky purple in hue. Cropped at 41hl/ha between 27 September and 14 October and matured in 40% new oak, it offers attractive blackcurrant, bilberry and subtle raisin scents that are impressively defined and focused. There is a “coolness” about these aromatics that I admire. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, gentle grip, very pure fruit with a citrus like freshness. Edgy towards the finish with just a faint graphite-like note emanating from the 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Certainly this is one of the best examples I have tasted from this Saint-Émilion estate.
      93-95 points

This is very complex with super fine, silky tannins that just take off. Full bodied with berry, chocolate and walnut flavors. Mushrooms and cedar, too.
      95-96 points
      James Suckling

An estate that deserves more recognition in the market today, the 2019 Château Bellefont-Belcier comes from a fabulous terroir not far from Larcis Ducasse and Château Pavie. Gorgeous cassis and black raspberry fruits give way to a full-bodied, incredibly elegant 2019 with loads of floral notes, the classic minerality of this terroir, ripe tannins, and blockbuster of a finish. The elegance and purity of this wine paired with its richness and depth are something.

Vibrant damson in colour. I love the deep creaminess that is evident from the first nose, with hints of cocoa and gunsmoke. There is more clay here than at Canon; about 50% of the vineyard has a clay layer over the limestone whereas at Canon it is closer to 10%, meaning Berliquet is less ethereal, more urgent and powerful, still with precision and feathery chalky tannins. They have restored the underground limestone cellars for barrel ageing. A yield of 45hl/ha. 45% new oak, for what is the 2nd full year of the Canon team working the vineyard. The 2019 Beychevelle is a rich, unctuous wine. Blackberry jam, cloves, licorice, bittersweet chocolate and torrefaction infuse the 2019 with tons of darkness that works well with the wine's flamboyant personality. Beychevelle will appeal most to readers who enjoy exotic, super-ripe wines. In 2019, Beychevelle pushes the limits, in my view.
      92-94 points
      Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Beychevelle, one of the only wines that I actually tasted at the château with Philippe Blanc prior to lockdown, has a wonderful bouquet with detailed blackberry, briary, cedar and light touches of mocha unfurling from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a discrete marine influence taking over towards the finish. There is a tang of seaweed and brine on the aftertaste. It keeps you coming back for more. This is a great 2019 from Blanc and his team though we must wait to see if it will surpass their 2018.
      93-95 points
      Neal Martin - Vinous

Rich, layered red with lots of ripe fruit and creamy, round tannins. Yet, it’s fresh and refined at the same time. Flavorful finish. Ripe and solid. Equal to the 2018 in quality.
      93-94 points
      James Suckling

A confident and well expressed Beychevelle, this is bristling with blackberry and cassis fruits, creamy through the mid palate as so many of the best wines are in this vintage. It's broad shouldered which takes it a little out of appellation signature, but the glamour is well balanced by a lovely crushed mint leaf finish. Harvest September 23 to October 10, 55% of production in this main estate wine, 45% in the 2nd wine. 60% new oak. 3% Cabernet Franc completes the blend.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Canon la Gaffeliere opens with an incredibly evocative perfume of lilacs, Morello cherries, black raspberries, jasmine and Sichuan pepper over a core of ripe black plums, wild blueberries and dark chocolate with touches of iron ore and cumin seed. The medium to full-bodied palate reveals an edifying intensity of electric blue and black fruit layers, supported by a rock-solid frame of firm, finely grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing long with a firework display of fruit, mineral and spicy nuances. A thrilling wine from the get-go and one that should age very well!
      95-97+ points
      Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate

The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière is a nervous, tightly wound wine. Then again, we are talking about a Cabernet Franc-driven Saint-Émilion. Sweet red berries, mint, blood orange and spice pulse with tremendous energy. Aromatically expressive and deep, Canon La Gaffelière builds effortlessly over time, leading to a bright, saline and mineral-drenched finish that is a thing of beauty. The 2019 shows much better from a full bottle (as opposed to a half), with silky tannins that emerge with a touch of aeration. I won't be surprised if the 2019 is even better from bottle than this note suggests.
      93-95 points
      Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière was picked from 19 September to 7 October at 51hl/ha and sees 60% new oak. It has a very focused bouquet, tight at first and benefitting from an hour's aeration. Eventually it reveals glorious red berry scents mixed with cedar, loamy soil and a pinch of cracked black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a return of that black pepper note right on the finish. Excellent.
      93-95 points

Blackberry, chocolate and hazelnut aromas and flavors. It’s medium-to full-bodied with polished, juicy tannins that give a dusty texture to the intense, rich finish. A traditional, classically structured and styled red.
      95-96 points
      James Suckling

I love the balance on display here, of powerful and softly whispering fruits, a tightrope of acidity and tannins giving structure. Great stuff, with the impact of 2018 but more freshness, although still with the signature glamour of a Neipperg wine in full flight.

Deep in color, initially you notice mint, flowers, forest leaf and red and black fruits. Rich, supple, silky and fresh, with an opulent, fruit-filled mid-palate and finish, the chalky sensations coming from crushed rocks, stone and a hint of spice with more of that gorgeous mint and pure pit fruits taste and feels just great in the finish. The wine was made from blending 49% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Franc and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2019 Cantenac Brown is dark, rich and super-expressive. Even with all of that intensity, Cantenac Brown retains a good bit of nuance and detail. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, espresso, licorice and menthol add gravitas and pure power. I very much like the balance here, as well as what seems like a move towards more finesse.
      92-94 points

Winemaker José Sanfins is doing sterling work at this fast-improving Margaux estate. The 2019 Cantenac Brown represents around half the crop, picked 18 September to 9 October and then matured in 60% new oak. It has a slightly more extravagant bouquet than its peers, more expressive with vivacious blackberry, raspberry and cranberry fruit mingling with cedar and cigar humidor scents. The palate is very cohesive with sappy red fruit, beautifully judged acidity and a harmonious, fulfilling dark chocolate-tinged finish that lingers wonderfully. What an exquisite, well-crafted Margaux with oodles and oodles of charm.

Here is a very pretty barrel sample with crushed berries, walnuts and hints of chocolate and smoke. It’s full-bodied and layered with lightly chewy tannins and a rich finish. Muscular for the vintage.

      James Suckling

Checking in as 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot that will spend 18 months in barrel, the 2019 Château Cantenac Brown is a beautiful Margaux, offering a deep purple color, loads blackcurrant and blueberry fruits, full-bodied richness, sweet tannins, and notes of chocolate, dried flowers, leather, and spice. This is one sexy, opulent Margaux that does everything right. It's going to be ready to go on release yet should have two decades of prime drinking.

Always a good value, the 2019 Château Cap De Faugeres is another winner, giving up plenty of juicy dark fruits, new leather, dried herbs, and floral hints as well as a medium-bodied, fleshy, fruit-forward and delicious style on the palate. It's going to keep for a solid decade or more.
      90-92 points

Pumped up but nicely balanced by freshness, this is full of dark fruits and is an enjoyable Castillon, without doubt one of the best of the appellation. Silvio Denz-owned estate, where the natural austerity of Castillon soils works well with the exuberance of his winemaking style.

Dark in color, the wine exudes licorice, smoke, dark chocolate, black pit fruits and cherries. Full-bodied, lushly textured and with a hedonistic, fruit and chocolate filled finish, this will offer a lot of bang for the buck. The wine was made from blending 80% old vine Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

The 2019 Cap de Faugères has a typical Fronsac bouquet with dense blackberry, briary and melted tar aromas that kind of shut the door in your face for broaching it prematurely. I don't mind that - it's still delineated and develops an appealing loam character. The palate is medium-bodied with quite hard tannins, a broad-shouldered and grippy wine in the making with a potent briny finish. It will certainly require several years in the cellar, but it is still a Fronsac with character.

      2019 Chateau Capbern Pre-Arrival Offer
      Saint Estephe, Bordeaux, FRANCE
      $47. 99 Bottle
      $575.88 Dozen
      Closure: Cork

Chateau Capbern (formerly Capbern Gasqueton) is on a roll since the new owners took over the estate, along with Calon Segur, in 2012. Already blessed with prime vineyards close to heavyweights Montrose and Phelan Segur, their winemaking facilities have recently been rejuvenated and the wines haven't looked better.
Vineyards at the estate are planted to 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 30 years. Vinification takes place in stainless steel vats, malolactic fermentation in tank, and the wine is aged in 50% new French oak barrels for 18 months.

      Other Reviews....
This is a gorgeous young sample with wonderful blue fruit and spices, as well as a nice overlay of pretty wood. Medium to full body and firm, silky tannins. Hints of minerals. Better than 2018.
      93-94 points
      James Suckling

Spicy black raspberries, cassis and blackberry fruits with just a touch of oak, wet earth and forest leaf aromas on the nose smell great. On the palate, the wine is lush, round and opulently textured, with length and purity in the fruits. Clearly, this is a new level for Capbern. The wine is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, reaching 15.1% alcohol.
      92-94 points
Jeff Leve - Wine Cellar Insider

Capbern is bold and exuberant in 2019. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and spice are kicked up a few notches here. Exuberant and racy to the core, Capbern is a total knock-out in this vintage. At 15.1% alcohol, this is an especially unctuous, rich and ripe style, but it works well in this vintage for this cru.

The blend this year is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, harvested from the 19th of September to the 9th of October. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Clerc Milon starts out a little closed and broody, offering notes of tar, chargrill, tapenade and Marmite toast over an emerging core of stewed plums, black cherries and kirsch with a touch of garrigue. The medium-bodied palate delivers loads of freshness with crunchy black fruits and a lively line, backed up by grainy tannins, finishing long and savory.
      92-94+ points
      Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate

Clerc Milon is especially fine in 2019. Dark and mysterious in the glass, with superb resonance, the 2019 reveals myriad dimensions of its personality with a bit of aeration. The 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, the highest since 1986, very much comes through in the wine's flavor profile and structural feel. Sage, mint, lavender, licorice and spice add complexity to the dark fruit in a Pauillac that delivers the goods.
      91-93 points
      Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Clerc Milon contains a higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (72%) as more of their sélection massale comes "on line". It is quite intense on the nose, a mixture of red and black fruit, sous-bois and traces of tobacco. There is a fullness to the aromatics that I appreciate, hints of brown spice emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. This is not a bold, structured Clerc Milon. This feels elegant and refined, gently building to a lightly spiced finish with judicious cracked black pepper and clove notes. Understated and classy. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
      91-93 points
      Neal Martin - Vinous

A very tight, precise red with super fine tannins that are tight and focused. Medium-to full-bodied with linear tannins and a bright, vivid finish. It’s leaner and refined. Precise and driven. This is a very cabernet sauvignon-driven Clerc with 72% cabernet sauvignon.
      94-95 points
      James Suckling

The top wine, the 2019 Château Clerc Milon is based on 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. More intensity and dark fruit emerge from the glass, and it has an elegant, medium to full-bodied style as well as classy Pauillac spice, cedar pencil, tobacco, and assorted darker fruits. It reminds me of the 2014 with its more elegant, charming style.
      93-95 points
      Jeb Dunnuck

The wine has the highest levels of Cabernet Sauvignon since the 1980s, and even on the nose you can feel its impact in terms of the depth of tight black fruit. Extremely good quality with fine tannins that build, build, build over the palate, and grip on, forcing you to slow down and pay attention. Beautiful spice with menthol, slate, pencil lead, blackberry and blackcurrant. An exciting wine with real energy and forward motion, helped to withstand the summer heat by its position by the river, and the fact that the average age of the vines at Clerc Milon is almost 50 years. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Jean Emmanuel Danjoy's last outing doing the full vintage at Clerc Milon before he heads over to Mouton as technical director.

The pale lemon-gold colored 2019 Coutet is a thrill ride from the get-go, exploding from the glass with fantastically intense scents of tangerine peel, lime blossoms and lemon marmalade over a core of pineapple upside-down cake, candied ginger, ripe apricots and clover honey plus suggestions of chanterelles and musk perfume. The palate is equally electric and exhilarating, prancing around the palate with a whole myriad of candied citrus, stone fruit and citrus flavors, charged by a racy backbone of acidity, finishing beautifully textured and with an epically long firework display of minerals. Apart from all that, it is pretty darn delicious.

Orange blossoms, honey, cinnamon spice, creme brulee, pineapple and candied apricots create the perfume. On the palate, the wine pops with honey-drenched pineapple, mango and orange marmalade. As sweet as this is, there is ample freshness to keep everything lifted.

Composed of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon with a potential of 14.5% alcohol and aging in 100% new French oak barrels, the 2019 Croix de Labrie has a very deep purple-black color. The nose opens with some very classy cedary notes, giving way to a profound core of baked plums, blackberry preserves and blueberry pie with touches of licorice, chargrilled meats, mocha and eucalyptus with a waft of red roses. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the palate has wonderful vibrancy for its weight, with a solid backbone of plush, ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. This chateau has been on a roll recently—I am more and more impressed every year.
      93-95+ points
      Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate

The 2019 Croix de Labrie is rich, creamy and expansive on the palate. Raspberry jam, mocha, spice, licorice and pomegranate build effortlessly. A hint of reduction lingers, but hopefully élevage will take care of that.
      90-92 points
      Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Croix de Labrie offers upfront black cherries, blackcurrant and cedar aromas on the nose, quite intense but well defined. The oak here is neatly assimilated. The palate is vibrant on the entry with layers of creamy black and blue fruit, silky smooth in texture with a modicum of restraint on the finish. It's one of the best wines that I have tasted from this Saint-Émilion Grand Cru in recent years.
      92-94 points
      Neal Martin - Vinous

This is really special and intense, showing incredible energy and brightness with perfumes that just jump out. Full body and incredible length. Changes all the time. So complex. Notes of iron, too. Love this. 97% merlot with cabernet sauvignon.
      97-98 points
      James Suckling

This rising superstar estate in Saint-Emilion has produced another brilliant wine in 2019. Based largely on Merlot brought up in new French oak, it reveals a dense purple hue as well as a powerful bouquet of black raspberry and cassis interwoven with plenty of graphite, candied violets, cedary spice, and chocolatey oak. This powerful, full-bodied Saint-Emilion stays beautifully balanced and has building tannins, a vibrant spine of acidity, and classic minerality on the finish. It's already hard to resist given the purity of fruit and silky tannins, but it's going to benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and keep for 20 years or more.
      95-97 points
      Jeb Dunnuck

Inky dark purple in color, you know this is intense from the moment the wine hits your glass. Chocolate, vanilla, blackberry, blueberry, smoke, flowers, licorice, and raspberry notes take no effort to find. There is good lift, loads of crushed rocks, opulent, velvety textures, and layer after layer of chocolate-covered black cherries. This could be the best wine yet from Croix de Labrie! The wine is a blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% alcohol.

The 2019 Fieuzal is expressive and layered. Dried herbs, lavender, sage, mint and crème de cassis come together in a rich and powerful wine that stops short of being too unctuous or overdone. A wine of terrific balance, the 2019 is classy, understated and polished; it is not terribly complex but it certainly is very pleasing.
      89-91 points
      Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 de Fieuzal, tasted from two sample bottles, has a clean and pure bouquet with perfumed, quite floral scents that infuse the blackberry and bilberry. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, saline in the mouth and spicier than some of its fellow Pessac-Léognans. Moderate depth, a distinct marine influence emerges towards the finish that lingers nicely. Could it have been better with more flair? Maybe, but it's a fine de Fieuzal.
      91-93 points

Wet earth with dark berries and crushed stones. Some mushrooms and bark. It’s medium-to full-bodied with open, chewy tannins. Some iodine undertones.

The 2019 Château De Fieuzal showed beautifully and should be the finest wine I've tasted from this estate (admittedly, I haven't tasted much). Deep purple-colored with a gorgeous bouquet of blackcurrants, spiced cherries, unsmoked tobacco, chocolate, and gravelly earth, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. It's beautifully done and I suspect will be a hidden gem in the vintage.

The 2019 Doisy-Védrines is a light, airy wine with pretty tropical notes and appealing perfume. The 2019 is at an awkward stage, with the oak showing through, but I expect it will be very, very good in time. Weight and texture develops over time here.

The 2019 Doisy-Védrines has an intense nose, though it does not quite have the precision of the Doisy-Daëne. The 2019 Doisy-Daëne is creamy, ample and resonant in the glass. Wild flowers, ginger, orchard fruit, pear and tangerine oil are some of the many strands that inform the 2019. Rich and yet also wonderfully light on its feet, the 2019 is hauntingly beautiful and impeccable in its balance.

The 2019 Doisy-Daëne is uncharacteristically backward on the nose and demands coaxing, eventually revealing lovely clear honey, quince and sea spray/oyster shell scents. Not the best Doisy-Daëne ever, but still a tiny bit fab.

Always a fascinating white among the Bordeaux big names because they choose to work outside of the system with unusual grapes, bottled as Vin de France. The grapes are Chardonnay, Gros Manseng, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc with, for me, the Viognier taking the lead at this stage, showing apricot and citrus notes alongside a white spice and soft cinnamon frame. Delicate, unusual and moreish - this needs time in the glass to really open up.

Flower and honeysuckle aromatics with pomelo, mango, white peach and banana notes are just great here. On the palate ,the wine is juicy, creamy and lifted. It is the combination of ripe fruits, cracked pepper, sweetness and blazing acidity that make everything work here. The 2019 Duhart-Milon is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, harvested from the 19th of September to the 4th of October. Deep garnet-purple in color, it springs from the glass with vivacious notes of plums preserves, black raspberries and blackcurrant pastilles with suggestions of menthol, dark chocolate, pencil lead and woodsmoke plus a touch of garrigue. Medium-bodied, the palate is spritely and refreshing, with bags of juicy, mint-laced black fruits and an approachable, plush texture, finishing long and lively.

The 2019 Duhart-Milon is terrific. The benefits of a cool site in a warm year are evident. Duhart does a very nice job of balancing those contrasting elements with its blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. Grilled herbs, menthol, licorice and dried herbs all grace this super-expressive, mid-weight Pauillac. Duhart is a bit unyielding today, but that should not be an issue in another few years' time. This is very nicely done.
Technical Director Eric Kohler describes 2019 as an easier vintage than 2018, a year that saw quite a bit of disease pressure and extremes of temperature. Kohler added that while 2019 was hot, it was consistently hot, and therefore the vines adapted to the conditions as opposed to being shocked by sudden changes. Yields were a very classic 36-40 hectoliters per hectare, depending on the property. Cuvaison was about three weeks, with gentle extractions. As always one of the signatures at Lafite is the use of a portion of press lots in the final blends.

      Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Duhart-Milon was picked from 18 September to 4 October and raised in 50% new oak. Of course, this comes from one of the coldest terroirs in Pauillac due to the orientation of the vineyard and less proportion of clay, which has become an advantage in warmer growing seasons such as this. The 70% Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the aromatics with dense black fruit, pencil shavings and tobacco aromas, traces of dark chocolate in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with spicy black fruits on the entry. This is quintessential Duhart: a bit broody, conservative in a non-pejorative use of the word, harmonious and quite sturdy towards the finish. I like this. Whilst it has no intention of being the most flamboyant Pauillac on the gravel terrace, it is imbued with nobility.

A very balanced, refined Duhart with ever so fine tannins and currant, tobacco and cedar aromas and flavors. Medium to fine tannins. It’s extremely long and polished. Direct. You already want to drink this.

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, the 2019 Château Duhart-Milon is a rich yet also elegant wine that has beautiful crème de cassis, toasted spice, graphite, and bouquet garni. This cooler terroir has yielded a beautiful, medium to full-bodied, elegant wine with loads of fruit and depth.

This one might sneak up on you, confirming the rise of this wine in recent years. Clear depth of fruit, and above all clear Pauillac character. This feels strict and confident, with beautiful balance and restraint. Duhart is one of the later-ripening and cooler Pauillac terroirs which is why in the past it could be overly austere when young, but it is benefitting from recent hot summers in terms of its fruit ripeness. Pencil lead is prominent here, along with cassis and bilberry. Very precise, very elegant, with a creaminess to the fruit through the mid palate, and overall this is an excellent Duhart.

The Ferran 2019 Blanc comes wafting out of the glass with provocative notes of ripe pineapple, white peaches and Bosc pears plus suggestions of honeysuckle, beeswax, orange blossom and fresh ginger. The 2019 Feytit-Clinet was cropped at 34hl/ha between 18 September and 3 October and matured in 70% new oak for an expected 16 months. It is understated at first and demands coaxing from the glass. It rewards you with pure black fruit, freshly shaved black truffles and touches of crushed stone. The palate is magnificent: precise tannins, a perfect line of acidity, impressive complexity and amazing focus. Oddly it reminds me of a Lafleur, though there is much less Cabernet Franc here. Unquestionably, this is the best Feytit-Clinet that Jeremy Chasseuil has overseen and I cannot wait to taste it in bottle.

The 2019 Château Feytit-Clinet is a beauty, offering loads of opulent blackcurrants, damp earth, licorice, new leather, and espresso aromas and flavors. It's a big, rich barrel sample that packs plenty of depth and richness, yet also stays light on its feet, with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It also offers integrated oak and a great finish. I'd be thrilled to have bottles in the cellar.

Some serious structure and lift going on here, this has walls to the tannins rather than just frame, and intends to hold its ground for a good few decades. Not the most exuberant Pomerol in the vintage, instead this goes for controlled but silky black fruits, holding back its coffee bean dusting until the wine has fully opened in the glass. Excellent quality from Jeremy Chasseuil at Feytit-Clinet in this vintage. 70% new oak. A yield of 42 hl/ha.

This hits you right where it counts with all the truffle, dark chocolate and earthy plums, Good levels of concentration, richness, and velvety tannins make all the dark cocoa, black cherry, plum and truffle that much better. The finish really sticks with you too, coaxing you back for another sip. The wine blends 92% Merlot with 8% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.8% alcohol with a pH of 3.8. This is a contender for the finest vintage of Feytit Clinet ever produced. Great job, Jeremy!

The 2019 Filhot has a light bouquet with honeysuckle and linseed aromas, perhaps just missing the energy and intensity of the best Sauternes. The palate is actually better than the nose suggests with admirable purity, well balanced and with a fresh, viscous finish of pineapple and peach. I just hope that the aromatics take a leaf out of the palate's book and improves during élevage.

My sample of 2019 Fonplégade came direct from the property. There is a lot going on aromatically with high-toned black cherries intermingling with incense, kirsch and desiccated orange peel aromas. Fortunately it manages to maintain both focus and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that lend this Saint-Émilion a corpulence that belies the structure that becomes tangible on the light grippy, quite spicy finish. This is a very well crafted Fonplégade, less ostentatious than previous vintages and all the better for it.

The 2019 Château Fonplegade showed brilliantly and I suspect will be one of the top vintages from this estate. Gorgeous black raspberry, spiced cherries, dried herbs, chocolate, and a touch of flowers all define the bouquet, followed by a full-bodied red with an elegant, seamless texture, silky tannins, and a great finish. It's going to benefit from 3-5 years of bottle age and drink beautifully for 10-15 years. Tasted twice.

      Jeb Dunnuck

Silky, rich, juicy blueberry and raspberry fruits, this is good quality and will age. It's less immediately voluptuous than the 2018, acidity seems a little higher, giving elegance and balance, with a mint leaf edge that gives a lovely cooling finish from an estate that is going from strength to strength. A yield of 35hl/ha.

Black raspberries, plums, flowers, smoke, crushed rocks, vanilla and stones open the nose. On the palate, you find silky tannins, sweet red, polished, soft, ripe fruits that express purity over power. Medium-bodied and finesse in style, give this 6-8 years in the cellar before opening a bottle to allow for more nuances to develop. The wine was made from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and reached 14.5% alcohol. The harvest took place September 20 to October 5.

The 2019 Grand Mayne takes its time to unfold in the glass, eventually delivering enticing and very pure red berry fruit, beautifully defined and less exuberant than some of the vintages I was tasting 15-20 years ago. There is a sense of terroir and mineralité in situ. The palate is saline on the entry, immediately grabbing your attention thanks to unbridled freshness and vivacity. Slightly grainy in texture, the umami sensation that glides towards a very precise and natural finish is wonderful here. Grand Mayne has been on an upward swing in recent vintages and this is another outstanding wine from Jean-Antoine Nony.
      94-96 points
      Neal Martin - Vinous

The clay-limestone soils here are cool, which often means the tannins are fairly bristling in their youth, and it takes its time to unravel in the bottle before drinking. There is an excellent structure and highly attractive smoked liquorice and toffee notes when you sit with it long enough for the fruit-acid-tannin combination to soften up. Good quality and enjoyable.

      Jane Anson - Decanter

Quite floral, you also find notes of licorice, espresso and earthy nuances to accompany all that beautiful, ripe, red fruit. Soft, silky and refined, this elegant, medium-bodied charmer will be better with 5-7 years in the cellar and should age and evolve for another 2 decades after that.

The 2019 Haut-Batailley is wonderfully resonant and deep in the glass Rose petal, lavender, spice and new leather overtones are nicely layered into a core of inky crème de cassis fruit. A wine of real substance and power, Haut-Batailley has quite a bit of potential

The 2019 Haut-Batailley, now of course part of the Cazes family's portfolio, is nicely detailed on the nose with blood orange and even a touch of marmalade tincturing the black fruit. The palate is very intense on the entry, the fruit remarkably pure with fine-grain tannins. This is a Haut-Batailley with ambition: very harmonious with touches of white pepper and cedar towards the finish. Is this a harbinger for things to come? I hope so.

The third vintage under the Cazes ownership, and happy to see that they maintain a style that is distinct from Lynch Bages, one than emphasizes the elegance that Cabernet Sauvignon can give over the power and concentration of Bages. Closure: Cork

As a wine often compared to Burgundy, Chateau La Conseillante produce one of the most refined and elegant examples in all of Bordeaux. Vines here are planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, and are situated on some of the finest land in Pomerol (with a touch of Saint-Emilion!).

      Other Reviews....
The 2019 La Conseillante is a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, harvested from the 17th of September to the 7th of October at yields of 34 hectoliters per hectare. It is being aged in 70% new French oak barrels, 27% second fill barrels and 3% amphora. The alcohol this year is 14.5% with a pH of 3.67. Very deep purple-black colored, it comes bounding out of the glass with all the energy of a new puppy, featuring notes of warm plums, wild blueberries and freshly crushed black cherries with hints of licorice, molten chocolate, violets, woodsmoke and tar plus a waft of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is laden with layer upon layer of black and blue fruits with loads of floral sparks and a very fine-grained, silt-like texture, finishing with incredible freshness and a provocative mineral edge. La Conseillante's signature perfume, purity and restrained power shine through with amazing clarity and style this vintage.

General Manager and Winemaker Marielle Cazaux turned out one of the jewels of the vintage with the 2019 La Conseillante. Fresh, nuanced and beautifully perfumed, the 2019 is a total stunner from the very first taste. What impresses me most about the 2019 is its freshness and vivacity, both so rare in 2019 in Pomerol. Inky dark fruit, lavender, mint and spice all build effortlessly. At 16%, the Cabernet Franc is particularly expressive, especially in the wine's aromatics. The 2019 is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Don't miss it.

The 2019 La Conseillante was picked 17-20 September for the Merlot and 30 September and 7 October for the Cabernet Franc. Yields were low at just 34hl/ha. The Grand Vin is aged in 70% new French oak, 27% one-year old barrels and 3% in clay amphora. Limpid purple in colour, this has an exquisite bouquet with pixelated blackberry and raspberry scents, laced with pressed iris and a touch of graphite. It reminds me of a less powerful version of the 2010 when I tasted that from barrel. The palate is very smooth with ebullient red and black fruit on the entry, then it tapers in a little, towards a very cohesive, satin-textured middle. This is definitely one of the purest La Conseillante wines that I have encountered from barrel. It delivers a subtle spiciness towards the finish with hints of tobacco and clove on the persistent aftertaste. Winemaker Marielle Cazaux and her team have conjured a magnificent Pomerol here.

A very fine, ethereal wine, offering blueberries, white truffles and violets. Full body and a wonderful texture with tannins that spread across the palate, caressing the mouth. Really polished to the finest grain. Extremely long. Shows strength with finesse.

      James Suckling

Deeply coloured, high aromatics with iris and violets, extremely focused with savoury fruits - a character that I have found in the Cabernet Francs in this vintage. It has an excellent grip that takes hold from the first moment and carries you through building tannins. A lovely tactile wine and an austere finish, signs that this will age for decades. The chocolate of Pomerol comes in on the end, but you have to wait for it, the beginning is savoury blueberry and raspberry fruit. Harvest September 17 to 21, taking in all the Merlot in four days, quite unusual but they knew rain was coming and wanted it to be in; they pick only in the morning to keep freshness, then Cabernet Franc September 30 and again one day October 7 (the drought slowed ripening more of the Cab Franc). A yield of 34hl/ha.

Lilacs and violets permeate the air before finding bitter chocolate, forest leaf, truffle, black raspberry, plum liqueur and black cherry juice. This wine is drenched in enough velvet to be classified as heart stopping! In fact, when tasting this with Marielle Cazaux, the director, over Zoom, I accidentally blurted out, "Holy F..K!" Yes, this is that good. This is pure bottled decadence that hits all your pleasure buttons. If you are seeking a deal closer, this Dionysian wine is the right choice! This is in serious contention for one of the wines of the vintage. The wine is a blend of 84% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.5% alcohol with 3.67 pH and is aging in 70% new French oak barrels, although 3% of the harvest is aging in amphora. The harvest took place September 17-20 for Merlot and September 30-October 10 for the Cabernet Franc.

Very deep purple-black in color, the 2019 la Fleur-Petrus soars out of the glass with vibrant notes of freshly crushed black cherries, warm plums and kirsch with underlying suggestions of wild sage, damp soil, charcoal and unsmoked cigars plus just a hint of Sichuan pepper. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins and bags of freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing long and savory.

        Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate (Jun 2020)

The 2019 La Fleur-Pétrus underwent double sorting, optical and manual, after harvest between 17 September and 3 October. It is matured in 50% new oak. It has a gorgeous bouquet with expressive red and black fruit, intermixed with crushed stone, freshly shaved black truffle and a touch of blue fruit perhaps originating from the 3% Petit Verdot. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, gently grippy tannins, undercurrents of tobacco and earth towards the finish. It actually ends more cerebrally than I anticipated, quite mercurial in the glass. This will require several years in bottle, but it will surely be worth the wait. Superb!

This is a genuine, old-school Pomerol with blueberries, wet earth and black tea leaf. It’s full-bodied, yet balanced and beautiful. Traditional and so attractive with a modern tone.

        James Suckling

The 2019 Château La Fleur-Petrus is impressive, and I suspect in the same ballpark as the 2018. Lots of darker, earthy fruits, crushed rock-like minerality, and chocolate notes emerge from this dense, concentrated, backward, and slightly hard to read barrel sample. I love its depth of fruit, it’s full-bodied, has plenty of opulence as well as tannins, and my money is on this coming together nicely in bottle. Patience, however, will be a virtue with this one.

A cornucopia of fragrances here ranging from flowers, black and blue fruits, truffle, smoke, wet earth and kirsch grab your focus. It only takes one sip to hook you with its silky, sexy attitude. Concentrated, opulent, fresh and with vibrancy to the fruits, the opulent character knocked me out.

Sporting a deep garnet-purple color, the 2019 La Gaffeliere reveals a tantalizingly bright, fresh nose of ripe black plums, crushed blackberries and warm black cherries with touches of lavender, star anise, Sichuan pepper and fragrant earth. The vibrant black fruits completely fill the medium to full-bodied palate with loads of crunchy, energetic flavors, framed by wonderfully plush tannins and a lively line of freshness, finishing with a mineral twist. Irresistibly scrumptious!

The 2019 La Gaffelière is deep, vivid and beautifully layered in the glass. Dark fruit, espresso, mint, lavender and mocha build as the 2019 opens up in the glass. Deep and fleshy, yet also light on its feet, it has a sense of translucence that carries through all the way to the finish. This is a stunning, riveting wine in every way. The Grand Vin is sourced from the core holdings comprised of about eleven hectares of vineyard. Tasted two times.

        Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 La Gaffelière is a distinctive Saint-Émilion, which should be inferred positively. There is something atypically very tertiary about the nose, beautifully defined and focused with plenty of fruit, yet very complex and cerebral. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and wonderful harmony. The silky texture belies the structure underneath and the finish is extraordinarily long. Ancient vintages of La Gaffelière like the 1961 are legendary. This ranks alongside them - the best I have ever tasted. Magnificent.
        95-97 points
        Neal Martin - Vinous

The flagship 2019 Château La Gaffeliere is mostly Merlot, yet the cuvée always includes around 15% Cabernet Franc. It offers a complex array of spiced red and black fruits, cedary herbs, lead pencil, and a kiss of tobacco to go with a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, impressively balanced style on the palate. It shows the more classic style of the vintage, has no hard edges, and a killer finish. It’s going to be relatively accessible in its youth yet also age gracefully for 15+ years or more. Tasted twice.

A medium-bodied red, offering deep, pretty fruit with walnut, wet-earth, mushroom and chocolate character. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit at the end. Beautiful depth to this.

An estate with a gathering sense of excitement around it, and once again proves why with the 2019. Sleek and flavourful, with the insistent tug of limestone slowing things down and allowing the juice and the tension to really inform the palate. Creamy texture also, with blueberry and raspberry fruit played gently against tobacco and crushed stone minerality. Highly successful.

The 2019 La Lagune has a finely chiseled bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruit, touches of damp clay, undergrowth and cedar developing with time. These aromatics are very nuanced and deserve time, not impactful but intellectual. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannins. Very linear and correct in style, it feels fresh and sapid, though I would have liked more flair to show through on the saline finish. Still, I like the grip and I suspect it will give 25-30 years drinking pleasure.

This shows very good concentration of ripe fruit in the center palate with medium body, ripe tannins and a wet-earth, berry and bark aftertaste. Lots of tannins and structure at the end. Solid. From organically grown grapes.

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26 % Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château La Lagune is a smoking little wine that should be snatched up by readers. Offering loads of gorgeous blue and black fruits, leafy herbs, tobacco, and cedar notes, medium to full body, and present yet ripe tannins, this textured, balanced beauty will benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and evolve for 15-20 years or more. It's well worth seeking out and is easily the finest wine I've tasted from this address. Don't miss it.

Full intensity plum colour, highly attractive aromatics that float up as soon as it hits the glass. Clear energy and tension through the body of the wine without the slightest dip in the mid palate. Not the most exuberant of the classified growths but this is seriously good quality, tight cassis and fine tannins. Organic certified, in conversion to biodynamics.

Composed of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 La Prade was harvested from the 30th of September to the 11th of October. Yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare this year. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose opens with classic plum preserves, warm blackberries, licorice and cedar chest scents, unfurling to reveal provocative suggestions of chargrill, red roses, dusty soil and cinnamon stick. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has exquisitely ripe, very fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness lifting all the densely packed black fruit and perfumed layers to a long, mineral-tinged finish. Impressive! About 2,300 cases are anticipated to be made.

The 2019 Château La Prade comes from more limestone soils and is a normal blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that's brought up in a rough split of new and used French oak. It's another wine from the Thienpont team that is going to represent a great value. Classic Bordeaux notes of cassis and black cherry fruits as well as a touch of new leather, spice, and dried tobacco, all emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, has good concentration, and enough structure to benefit from a year or two of bottle age.

The 2019 La Vieille Cure dazzles from start to finish. Inky dark fruit, lavender, licorice and espresso infuse the 2019 with striking depth and textural resonance. Vieille Cure has tremendous presence and pedigree to burn; it is one of the under-the-radar gems of the vintage.

The 2019 La Vieille Cure has a palpable "strictness" on the nose, not quite as expressive as other Fronsacs at this nascent stage. The palate is succulent with supple tannins, bitter black cherry mixes with sage and salted liquorice that segues into a persistent finish. If the aromatics improve it will land at the top of my banded score.

The smaller appellations on the Right Bank did beautifully in 2019. The 2019 Château La Vieille Cure reveals a saturated purple color as well as a big, smoky bouquet of ripe black fruits, tobacco, and crushed rocks, with an almost Pomerol-like opulence and richness on the palate. It's a big, blockbuster Fronsac offering ripe tannins, terrific depth of fruit, and a great finish. It will be another gem in this vintage that's going to represent a great value. It should easily evolve for 10-12 years, if not longer.

The 2019 Labégorce, picked from 19 September to 12 October and matured in 40% new oak, has one of the more flamboyant Margaux bouquets with expressive black cherries, bilberry, light cedar notes and crushed violet. It develops impressive cohesion with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and what you first notice is the finesse of the tannins. This has a satin-like texture and very well judged acidity. The new oak does poke out a little on the finish - if that can be assimilated during its barrel maturation, this could turn into a very serious Margaux.

The largest of the Perrodo estates in Margaux, this is a little heavier set and muscular than the Marquis d'Alesme, extremely accomplished and majoring on coffee beans and tobacco alongside blackcurrant fruits. Enjoyable, a little less signature Margaux that its sibling property but this is a delicious gourmet-edged wine, and a brilliant (relatively) value choice in the appellation.

Wet earth, spice, tobacco leaf, oak, smoke, black and red fruits are the first things one notices, but not the last. The wine is rich, refined, elegant and fresh. The fruit is ripe, pure and vibrant. The energy, length and delicious, ripe, sweet fruit and spice in the finish is a treat. Today, it is hard to find a better wine for the money in the ever-increasingly expensive Margaux appellation. The wine is a blend of 45% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot that reached 14 alcohol. The wine is aging in 40% new, French oak.

The 2019 Langoa Barton has a very typical Langoa nose, which is a good thing, sporting vivacious black cherries, blackberry, crushed iris, cedar and light blood orange scents lurking offstage. Lovely oak integration here. The palate is beautifully defined on the entry, a structured almost big-boned Langoa with enormous grip on the spicy finish. I love the generosity of this Saint-Julien, one that I suspect will be seductive on release but don't be deceived - it deserves cellaring lest you get a smacked wrist for being impatient.

Very finely textured with pure blue fruit and lavender and violet undertones. It’s full-bodied with pure, focused fruit. Extremely long and refined. Clearly better than the 2018.

Checking in as 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Château Langoa Barton offers up a dense purple color as well as notes of blackberries, smoked earth, chocolate, and leafy herbs. This rich, medium to full-bodied effort has an expansive, mouthfilling texture, beautiful mid-palate density, and outstanding length. It's going to have some upfront appeal, but my money is on it benefiting from a solid 5-7 years of bottle age.

Silky blackberry and bilberry fruits, this is a brilliant Langoa, with concentration and lift that pull you both forwards and upwards through the palate. For me this is more successful than the 2018 because it delivers an absolute punch of fruits but gently so, with elegance and control that is very St Julien. Grilled cedar finish, great stuff.

2019 Chateau Larcis Ducasse Pre-Arrival Offer
        Saint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE
        $140. 00 Bottle
        $1680.00 Dozen
        Closure: Cork

        Other Reviews....
Composed of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Larcis Ducasse was harvested from the 25th of September to the 7th of October. Yields were 38.5 hectoliters per hectare this year, with around 70% of production going into the grand vin. Deep garnet-purple in color, it sails out of the glass with effortlessly graceful notes of fresh blackberries, warm red and black plums and mulberries plus hints of cedar chest, potpourri, powdered cinnamon and clove oil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is quite tightly wound, giving glimpses of spice and mineral layers among the black fruits and firm, rounded tannins, finishing with bags of freshness and energy. About 2,850 cases are anticipated to be made.

The 2019 Larcis Ducasse is a Saint-Émilion of energy and tension. Graphite, menthol, licorice, tobacco and cedar notes open up in the bouquet. On the palate, though, the 2019 is much more reticent. That is likely a very good thing for its long-term prospect. One of the features of Larcis is the use of 500-liter barrels (which are rarely seen in Bordeaux) for certain parcels. Those larger barrels certainly add to the wine's freshness and verve. Larcis is one of the more introverted 2019s I tasted. It is also one of Bordeaux's most under the radar gems.

The 2019 Larcis Ducasse is deep purple in colour. The bouquet is opulent and ravishing with precocious dark cherry, cassis and crushed violet aromas that seem to envelop the senses, "hug them into submissions!" The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that manage to exert good grip, though you only notice that after the wine has exited. Great depth, touches of ash and black pepper infusing the black fruit with unerring balance on the finish. This is an outstanding Saint-Émilion with 30-40 years of pleasure to give.

A full-bodied red that’s powerful, very rich and very deep. Floral and spicy with dried fruit, earth, tobacco and mushrooms. Dense center palate. Great depth. Traditional.
        98-99 points
        James Suckling

Coming from an incredible terroir on the Côte Pavie, which is a south-facing hillside of clay and limestone soils, the 2019 Château Larcis Ducasse sports a deep purple color as well as classic Saint-Emilion minerality in its chocolatey dark fruits, scorched earth, camphor, and tobacco aromas and flavors. This rich, full-bodied effort shows the more elegant, supple style of the vintage, yet it still has building tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and a great finish. It's certainly in the same ballpark as the 2015 and 2016, and while a few years of bottle age will do it well, it should be relatively accessible in its youth.
        95-97 points
        Jeb Dunnuck

This is intense, pretty austere as is often the case with a young Larcis Ducasse, and very much with Cabernet fruits dominant even though they are 12% of the blend (it is rather that the Merlot on these limestone soils takes on a depth and seriousness that makes it almost Left Bank in feel). Opens up to reveal fleshy cassis and blackberry. A yield of 38.5hl/ha. Owned by Famille Gratiot-Attmane, but with the Nicolas Thienpont team overseeing winemaking. Tasted twice, one week apart.

Like walking into a flower market with cherries and plums all over the floor, the wine is fresh, silky, long and stony. The salty tannins are ripe, long and there is a fabulous oceanic note in the finish that carries. Not as powerful as the 2018, but there is perhaps better purity and a more approachable, sensuous style. Made from blending 88% Merlot with 12% Cabernet Franc. The harvest took place September 25 to October 7.

Composed of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Laroque was harvested from the 30th of September to the 10th of October. Yields were 43 hectoliters per hectare this year. Alcohol came in at 14.5%, with a relatively low pH of 3.44. Deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts from the glass with bold scents of blueberry preserves, Black Forest cake, dark chocolate and lilacs with underlying hints of aniseed, espresso and pencil lead plus a waft of smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is completely filled with dark, seductive berry layers and a whole myriad of savory nuances, framed by wonderfully soft, velvety tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and perfumed. Beautiful!

        Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate

The 2019 Laroque is plaint, silky and super-expressive, even in the early going. The purity of the fruit is striking. Medium in body, Laroque captures all of the radiance of the personality while retaining a very classic mid-weight sense of structure. Raspberry jam, spice and red plum meld into the juicy finish. The 2019 is very nicely done.

        Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Laroque has a very ripe and generous bouquet with scents of small black cherries intermingling with camphor and light spicy aromas. This is a nose that wants to make an impression. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet ripe entry, layers of red fruit (cranberry, redcurrant and raspberry) mixed with soy and white pepper. It remains well defined right to the finish with a pastille-like aftertaste. This is a very fine 2019 from a rejuvenated estate under the guidance of David Suire.

This is very minerally and stony with crushed cement. Medium to full body and firm, polished tannins. It’s floral and complex. So fresh and bright. Wonderful balance to this. Elegance and drinkability. Better than the 2018. One of best ever.

The 2019 Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc is a rich, textured white. Apricot, orange confit, chamomile, sweet oak and lightly honeyed notes all grace this creamy, super-expressive dry white. The aromatics here are very tropical, luscious, and bold. Extroverted, racy and absolutely impeccable in its balance, the 2019 is a classy wine. The 2019 is 70% Sauvignon and 30% Sémillon aged in new oak, cask and cement.

The 2019 Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc is slightly deeper in colour compared to its peers. The bouquet is charming, replete with honeysuckle, lemon zest and white flower aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is vibrant on the entry with tangy orange rind and a saltiness that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. Drink over the next 10-20 years (if you can resist.)

A bright, dense white with lots of dried-lemon, pear and apple character. Some vanilla and cream. It’s full-bodied and flavorful. Seriously structured.

The white from here is always solid as well and seems to be on an upward trajectory. The 2019 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc reveals a healthy light gold color as well as classic Graves Blanc notes of ripe pineapple, mandarin orange, honeysuckle, and exotic flowers. With plenty of fruit, medium to full body, juicy acidity, and a clean finish, it's a classy, outstanding white in the making. Tasted twice.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Latour à Pomerol comes bounding out of the glass with vivacious notes of stewed plums, Black Forest cake and blueberry preserves plus suggestions of licorice, candied violets, incense and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating, juicy black and blue fruits with a soft texture of rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and earthy.

The 2019 Latour à Pomerol is elegant, resonant and super-expressive. Succulent dark cherry and red plum fruit give the 2019 tons of appeal. Tar, graphite, rose petal, menthol and dark spice overtones add layers of gravitas over time, with muscular tannins that build into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures. There is a lot of wine here.

The 2019 Château Latour a Pomerol is stunning stuff and shows the elegance and purity paired with rocking levels of fruit that’s the hallmark of this vintage. Red and black currants, mulled black cherries, chocolate, tobacco leaf, and truffle notes dominate the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, has a beautiful sense of balance, silky tannins, and a great finish. I’d be happy to have bottles in the cellar.

The truffles say hello with little effort before discovering all the voluptuous black cherries, ripe plums, dark cocoa, flowers and accents of juicy kirsch and more dark chocolate in the endnote. The wine is rich, lush, earthy and fresh. Give this 5-7 years and enjoy it over the following 20 years or longer. Latour Pomerol keeps getting better year after year and 2019 clearly continues the trend.

The 2019 Le Boscq is a dense, powerful wine. Inky dark fruit, charcoal, lavender, spice and tobacco add layers of nuance to this inky, beautifully resonant Saint-Estèphe. Rich, deep and racy, Le Boscq has a lot to offer. Today, it is shaping up to be one of the gems of the vintage. The 2019 is absolutely terrific and a potential sleeper of the vintage.

The 2019 Le Boscq has a splendid bouquet with blackberry, bilberry and light estuarine scents, as if they captured a whiff of the Gironde in the bottle. Good definition too. Planted to 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, Chateau Le Gay is on a roll over recent vintages. Since 2005 the wines have started to reach the peaks they showed with legendary vintages from the 1940’s and 1950’s culminating with the stunning pair of 2015 and 2016.

            Other Reviews....
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Le Gay springs forth with exuberant scents of crushed black cherries, warm blueberries and boysenberries with nuances of cedar chest, Indian spices, licorice and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of ripe black fruits and loads of spicy sparks, framed by plush tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing long and decadent.

            Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate

The 2019 Le Gay is sleek, nuanced, and full of potential. Dark, sumptuous and inviting, with notes of dark cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice, spice, menthol and espresso, Le Gay is especially fine in 2019. It is rich, racy and exotically ripe, but not at all overly heavy - and that's a combination that works very well.
            93-95 points
            Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2019 Le Gay has an unashamed old school Pomerol bouquet that I like, very terroir driven with loamy black fruit, touches of shaved black truffle and warm gravel. It is not a fruit-forward, sensual Pomerol - this is much more intellectual, like some of the older Le Gay that I tasted during the Robin sisters era. The palate is very well balanced with plenty of red fruit, structured like Le Gay usually is with brown spices and clove towards the persistent finish. It is one of the appelation's most fascinating wines and it should age with style.

            Neal Martin - Vinous

Wow. Very focused and decadent with lots of crushed berry, coffee and chocolate character. It’s full-bodied, yet energetic and focused with chewy tannins. Big wine for the vintage, yet fresh and bright at the end.

            James Suckling

From one of my favorite estates in Pomerol, the deep purple-hued 2019 Château Le Gay checks in as 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in mostly new French oak. This is a ripe, sexy, superrich, blockbuster styled effort with awesome aromatics (cassis, spice, tobacco, damp earth, and chocolate), a deep, layered mid-palate, ripe tannins, and an awesome finish. This is a 2019 barrel sample I thought about drinking.

            Jeb Dunnuck

A brilliant Le Gay, plump and rich as is the estate signature, with full-on tannins that close in towards the end of play. Very true to the spirit of the property, and a good reflection of Pomerol also, overloaded with blueberry and blackberry flavour, great floral aromatics, packs a punch. New cellar, with integral vinification in barrel. Harvest September 16 to October 3. A yield of 35hl/ha.

Dark in color, this is stunning, due to its multiple layers of chocolate-covered plums, cherries, truffle and silky, gently dusted tannins. Once part of a much larger vineyard that included Chateau Leoville Las Cases and Chateau Leoville Poyferre, Second Growth producer Chateau Leoville Barton now spans 47 hectares and is owned by the same family as Chateau Langoa Barton. In fact, there is no Chateau on the property, and the image on the label is actually that of Langoa Barton where the wines are made.

Wines from this property are traditional and sturdy in style, and the best vintages can require decades to reach their peak. Vineyards are planted to 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc.

            Other Reviews....
The 2019 Léoville Barton is a different kettle of fish compared to its sibling Langoa. It has a complex bouquet of blackberry, sous-bois, tobacco and minerals, much more introverted yet exceedingly complex. The palate is exquisite in terms of balance, laden with intense black fruit laced with orange zest, that citrus element counterbalancing the tannic grip and structure. There is a sense of completeness to this Léoville-Barton, certainly on par with the best vintages in recent years. A formidable yet charming Saint-Julien in the making.

            Neal Martin - Vinous

A pure, focused red with blackberries and blackcurrants. Very floral, too. Medium-to full-bodied, tight and fine-tannined. Pretty clarity and balance to this. Less muscular than the 2018, but very attractive all the same.
            95-96 points
            James Suckling

The vivid purple, almost blue-hued 2019 Château Léoville Barton is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine that includes 16% Merlot. It will spend 18 months in a mix of new and used barrels. Classic Barton notes of cassis, scorched earth, burning embers, new leather, and violets emerge from the glass, and this beauty is full-bodied, massively concentrated, and structured on the palate, yet it has a beautiful elegance as well as a plushness in its texture. Nevertheless, it's not for those seeking instant gratification and is going to need 10-15 years of bottle age to hit maturity. It reminds me of the 1990 and is a great, great wine in the making. If you love Léoville Barton, don't miss this wine!

Medium to full intensity in colour, this is glass-staining ruby and yet another hit from an estate that is making seriously great wine right now. Mint and eucalyptus are clear, tension and grip held through the palate. This has shoulders and swagger to the tannins, pure cassis hit of fruit and some lovely black chocolate and slate overtones along the way. Strays almost to Pauillac in terms of the weight of the tannins, but it's brilliant.
