The Boulard family have been producing Calvados for more than 160 years. The company was established by Pierre Boulard in 1825 and has been passed down from father to son ever since, with Vincent the current managing director. Although it joined with Martini and Rossi in 1987, the business is still run entirely by the family.
The company, was originally based at Damigny in the Orne, but moved to Coquanvilliers in the Pays d'Auge region of Calvados - regarded as the best - just before the Second World War. Pierre Boulard, father of Vincent, started exporting some 40 years ago. At that time, 95 per cent of production was for the home market: now 40 per cent is exported. Boulard produces Calvados only, in the Pays d'Auge, in the heart of the Calvados region. All Calvados bearing this appellation must be produced from apples grown within the district, and only the double pot still method of distillation is allowed.
The Pays d'Auge Calvados are aged for at least three years, although Boulard produces Calvados which are much older, such as Hors d'Auge which is aged for a minimum of six years and the X.O. whish is obtained from blending several Calvados varieties aged between 8 and 15 years. Boulard XO is recognised for its complex aromas of grilled almonds and ripe apples, as well as its balance. Delicious when consumed at the end of a meal.
Tasting Note: Shiny amber colour.On the nose, harmonious apple and vanilla, with elegant hints of oak. On the palate, ripe apple, spices, nuts. Very smooth. Spicy aftertaste with an exceptional persistence. 40%Alc./Vol.
