Gordon & MacPhail purchased the Benromach distillery from United Distillers and reopened the distillery in 1998. They installed new stills and are using malt with a recognizable level of peating. The phenol levels in this bottling reach 62 PPM (parts per million) - not dissimilar to many of Islay's malts (it's the same intensity of peating as Laphroaig, for example). The whisky was distilled in 2006 and bottled in 2016 after being matured in first fill Bourbon casks.
Tasting note: [2007 bottling sampled] Very pale straw appearance. At first, a no holds barred, peaty assault plus nose prickle; settles back as mildly briny cereals enter. The peat fades slightly with subsequent nosing. Sweet barley and vanilla cream come forward. Entry is youthful and punchy, but the peat is never over the top. Medium dry, with good depth. Peat, spice and vanilla are present in this robust, eminently enjoyable smokey Speysider that shows good balance throughout. Lengthy, drying aftertaste. 46% Alc./Vol.
