2018 Samuel Billaud Montee de Tonnerre Chablis Premier Cru

Chablis, FRANCE
$115. 00
Bottle
$1380.00 Dozen
ABV: 13%
Closure: Cork

While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

Other Reviews....
A softly citrus-infused nose flashes notes of white flower, mineral reduction, tidal pool and quinine hints. The finer if somewhat less concentrated flavors possess evident minerality and a lovely sense of verve while displaying excellent length and very good depth. This promising effort is a combination of finesse and punch.

The 2018 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre offers up aromas of crisp orchard fruit, honeycomb, pear and dried white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and incisive palate with a delicately textural attack and a tightly wound core. Still youthfully reserved, this vibrant wine will reward a little bottle age.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (July 2020)

The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from a hectare of 45-year-old vines and was vinified in stainless steel vats and 450-liter barrels before aging for 18 months on the lees. It has a pretty nose of orange blossom, white peach and Japanese yuzu scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced, with Granny Smith apples and pear on the entry, a vibrant thread of acidity, and quite a linear, taut finish that is perhaps more 2017 in style. Overall, this is a superb Montée de Tonnerre for those who like "classic" Chablis.

We tasted the tank component which will be blended with some barrels later. Bright pale colour, the nose is well balanced and quite discreet. Strict and stylish, with good weight behind, but very much on the mineral end rather than the sun trap style. Very long and pure, extremely successful.
