The Farr Rising Pinot Noir is one of those wines that never fails to impress, often rivalling the quality of its bigger By Farr siblings. Much more approachable in their youth, recent back vintage tastings show they also have excellent cellaring potential over the medium term. On a comparative basis to Burgundy it delivers great value for money.
The fruit for this wine is grown on two different sites at the winery in Bannockburn. The first site is a mixture of 114 and 115 pinot clones in a loam soil with iron stone pebbles, the second is the MV6 clone planted in black volcanic soil over loamstone. The fruit is hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard and fermented in open-top fermenters of which 60% to 70% of the fruit is typically destemmed. The wine is matured in Allier barrels (20-30% new) for 18 months.
Slightly cloudy but showing good depth with a bright dark red colour and light red hue. Very fragrant and pretty the nose opens with aromas of violets tied to red and dark cherries, winter strawberries, faint sour cherry notes and clove. Scents of forest floor, fresh herbs and spicy cedar ensue. Light in body yet very expansive, there’s ample power behind the delicious red to dark cherry and winter strawberry fruits which are complexed by traces of sour cherry, light clove, forest floor, dried herbs and spicy cedar. Showing elegance and finesse it finishes with plenty of freshness. Seamlessly integrated tannins lend polish to a very long and savoury aftertaste.
