2017 Tyrrell's Wines Single Vineyard Stevens Hunter Shiraz

The grapes are sourced from the Old Hillside vineyard’s mature 50 year old vines (previously owned by the Stevens family in Pokolbin). The vineyard contains the Old Patch, which was planted in 1867 and is the oldest producing vineyard in NSW.

Opaque bright dark red black core with a vibrant purple red hue. The nose dispels a mix of dark cherry, liquorice and subtle blueberry aromas trailed by some scorched earth and spicy vanillin cedar notes. Medium bodied, the elegant palate has a savoury flavour profile of spicy dark cherries and liquorice over toasty oak, earth and light pepper. Supple mid palate feel with finely grained tannins, youthful acidity and a medium length aftertaste.

A radically different bouquet with aromas of black fruits, black olive, French oak and earth leads into a vibrant dark berry palate. A truly fascinating wine, at the moment polarising opinions. It does have one more trick up its sleeve: a mouthwatering, sweet and sour (in the best sense) finish and aftertaste. Drink by 2057.

Pretty like a new handbag with cosmetics, boysenberry pie, touch of spice, vanilla oak and earth. Medium bodied, supple and succulent, bright fruit in the forest berry department, soft fine milk powder tannin caresses the mouth, and pulls a sure grip on the finish. Acidity sits perfectly. There’s a greater level of purity and finesse in these 2017 releases from Tyrrell’s, and the winemaking is sensitive and deft. What a delight. Classic Hunter Shiraz here.
