2017 Penny’s Hill Skeleton Key Shiraz

McLaren Vale, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
$29.99 Bottle
  • Cellar Drink Now - 8 years (2020-2028)
  • ABV 14.5%
  • Closure: Stelvin

Sourced from the original Penny’s Hill vineyard, its slightly higher elevation means it enjoys a climate a little cooler than the rest of McLaren Vale. This ensures more consistent temperatures throughout the ripening period, allowing Shiraz to reach optimum ripeness with minimum stress. Individual blocks were harvested and vinified separately to best express the variation in terroir. Fruit was crushed and fermented on skins in open fermenters for 10 days prior to pressing. Maturation was in French oak of which approximately 35% was new oak. The balance was matured in 1, 2 and 3 year old oak and after 18 months the final wine was blended.

Highly concentrated and bursting at the seams with richness the structurally brilliant 2017 Skeleton Key continues Penny Hill’s hot run of form.

Pours a dense inky black colour with a very deep dark red black hue. A potent mixture of liquorice, black cherry and blackberry aromas wafts through the nostrils followed by hints of dark chocolate, vanillin oak, earthy fennel and spicy pepper notes. Rich and opulent in texture the blockbuster palate is packed with sumptuous blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruit. Spicy vanillin oak, scorched earth, subtle notions of fennel and blackpepper then chime in to provide additional complexity. The velvet like tannins have an underlying firmness. Magnificent depth and polish with a lavish and exceptionally long aftertaste laced with blackpepper.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.
