Vin de Constance from Klein Constantia has a history dating back over 300 years. In the 18th and 19th centuries “the sweet luscious and excellent wine of Constantia” was recognised as one of the great wines of the world, savoured by royalty and given pride of place in the cellars of the world’s greatest wine collectors. Although production ceased during the mid-to-late 1800s, it was revived in the 1980s during the redevelopment of Klein Constantia Estate. Early records were studied and careful selection made from vines which, in all likelihood, came from the original stock used in Constantia 300 years ago. Vin de Constance is a late-harvest style made from Muscat de Frontignan (aka Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) grapes, without botrytis.

Boasting a juicy and fruity nose, the 2017 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine is pale gold in the glass with a delightfully concentrated stone fruit essences that sway with elements of white peach, nectarine, dried apricot, apple and quince purée before notions of jasmine honeysuckle waft from the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the wine displays a succulent peach nectar flavor as it effortlessly glides across the mid-palate, flaunting with elegance and finesse. The juicy acidity framed with the layers of fruit and floral context leaves me just staring at my glass while the wine continues to evolve and unfold in the mouth. The wine coasts to an elongated finish that will have you picking your glass up again sooner than you know. Bravo! Drink 2022 - 2060.

This is really sensational as always with dried-apricot, dried-pineapple and honey character with salted nuts and hints of white syrup. It’s very sweet, yet energetic and intense. It goes on for so long. And then again. Yet, it remains balanced. A great sweet wine through and through. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Vin de Constance is lucid silvery-straw in hue. It is beautifully defined on the nose, featuring scents of dried honey, almond, praline and pressed yellow flowers, perhaps borrowing some of the airiness of the 2016 vintage. The palate is underpinned by a keen line of acidity that effortlessly counterbalances the richness of this 2017, making it one of the easiest sweet wines to drink in its youth. It conveys plenty of energy with a very persistent orange peel, quince and marmalade finish, then a spicy aftertaste. Sublime. Sample sent from Klein Constantia.
