2016 Bordeaux En-Primeur Offer
With the hype machine for 2016 Bordeaux having started already, what do we know so far? 2016 was definitely a vintage of two halves, with the cool and wet start to summer a concern for most vignerons. A years’ worth of rain fell from January to June, and many feared another 2013 vintage was on the cards. But what followed was a dry, hot summer through until September, a small burst of rain to freshen things up, then warm dry days up to harvest. Ideal conditions for ripening all varieties, and across all communes.
To date the Bordelais have been very reserved when discussing the vintage, while most are very pleased with the wines they aren't yet getting drawn into excessive hyperbole. That can't be said for various wine commentators who are already comparing 2016 to other landmark vintages such as 2010, 1982, and 1961. Time will only tell if these comparisons are fair, but despite these lofty expectations it does appear that this will be an outstanding vintage, adding to the run of great years in 2014 and 2015.
“These 2016s are real Bordeaux!”
- Christophe Salin, general director of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite)
Stylistically the wines have intense colour and depth, bright ripe fruit, but the key is their freshness. Alcohols are moderate and acid levels relatively high. It's the style of Bordeaux that many commentators and consumers have been hunting for, avoiding the excessive extraction and caricature nature of wines once preferred by Robert Parker. Thankfully yields are also up on previous years, both in volume of crop and the percentage of wine making it into the first wine for each house. Again this year we will be offering a range of wines from all communes, red, white, and sweet.
