The Phoenix name recognises the first winemaking company purchased by Douglas Austral Tolley , purchased in 1888. This company began in 1858, as “The Phoenix Winemaking and Distilling Company”, in Stepney, South Australia. In 1888 this was changed to “Tolley Scott Tolley” (T.S.T.) and remained with the family till 1960. D.A Tolley’s great grandson, Kym Tolley, has continued the unbroken family winemaking tradition, establishing Penley Estate in 1988. The wines have recently undergone a complete revamp of their packaging.

Attractively priced, the Phoenix combines Coonawarra’s classic elegance and structure with a good dose of richness.

The wine was barrel aged in French oak for 18 months of which only 5% was new. Totally opaque black dark red core with a deep bright dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced ripe blackcurrant aromas are followed by some mulberry, subtle black olive, mint infusions and spicy lightly dusted cedar. Medium bodied with more than ample richness the palate features ripe blackcurrant and dark cherry flavours over cedary tobacco characters, a touch of black olive and spice. Elegantly structured with fine grained yet solidily built tannins providing a good framework. Long aftertaste of spicy blackcurrant, dark cherries, subtle cedary tobacco characters and spice.
Cellar 5-6 years.
Alc 14.5%
