2013 Wilson & Morgan Barrel Selection Ben Nevis 7 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Tasting note: [15ml sample] From a single Oloroso sherry butt. Needs time to breathe but promises the goods on the nose - slightly let down on the delivery which finishes a little firm, astringent and short. Significantly better with water. 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottler... Earthy and industrial on the nose, this Ben Nevis is exactly as expected. Balanced sherry aromas are met with the funkiness of the ailing distillery in Fort William. Surprisingly fresh and fruity but with typical Ben Nevis depth. Nose: Muscatels and washed rind cheese, golden syrup dumplings with salted caramel ice cream. Palate: Cleaner than expected on the palate with a medium body and a pleasantly restrained wine character. This does actually have some genuinely old sherry cask characters about it. A great cask that’s given just enough sweetness to carry the funky, earthiness of the spirit really well. Notes of orange, red berries and still good cereal firmness. Finish: Roasted nuts and a bit of grip from the oak tannins give a cleansing dryness without being astringent.
