Tar & Roses is a joint venture between former Mitchelton winemaker Don Lewis and his colleague Narelle King. The pair have a habit of producing wines that deliver beyond the expectations of their price points and they have excelled with this offering. Fruit was sourced from a variety of vineyards, some on the deep red Cambrian soil and others located on tougher more gravelly ground. Maturation took place in a combination of new French and older barriques.

Not since the early releases of Tyrrell’s Rufus Stone and more recently Tatiarra’s Culled Barrel have we seen Heathcote Shiraz of this quality at such a miserly price. Our recommendation is a strong buy.

Another 2013 Heathcote Shiraz that displays spectacular colour saturation – totally opaque inky black core with a very deep dark purple black hue. The nose offers up an intense aromatic profile of liquorice and ripe blackberries followed by some dark plum and lightly toasted vanillin oak with blackpepper end notes. Fabulously rich, yet structured the palate is decorated with an assortment of liquorice, ripe blackberry and black cherry flavours with underlying toasty vanillin cedar and a peppery finish. Solid robust tannins provide the perfect framework. Excellent power with a long black pepper infused aftertaste of ripe blackberries, black cherries and toasty vanillin cedar. With its core of rich opulent fruit framed within a firm robust structure, this is a cellar special that will prove to be a beauty in years to come.
