2013 John Gehrig Wines Durif

A big, rich, chewy Rutherglen Durif. Impenetrable black as night core with a very deep dark red black hue. Heady aromatics of ripe black cherries, liquorice and dark chocolate rise out of the glass over vanillin oak and spice. Monstrous palate weight with luscious black fruit flavours of ripe black cherries, liquorice and traces of Morello cherries saturating the mouth, ably supported by firm grippy tannins which impart some chewiness to the otherwise opulent textural feel. Also evident are nuances of vanillin oak, new leather and spice. Outstanding power and concentration with a long chewy but lavish aftertaste of luscious black cherries, liquorice, vanillin oak, leather, subtle earth and spice.
