Magnificent impenetrable inky black core with a deep dark red black hue. Intoxicating scents of blackberry, liquorice and dark plum infused with vanillin cedar are trailed by some fennel and black pepper. Boasting thrilling richness and concentration, succulent ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum flavours swamp the front palate over notions of black cherry, spicy vanillin cedar, hints of fennel and blackpepper. A robust tannin structure acts as a place holder yet is largely concealed by the density of fruit. Excellent power with a long conclusion of liquorice, blackberries, dark plums, black cherries, spicy vanillin cedar and black pepper.
Cellar 6-8 years.
Alc 14.5%

Other Reviews….
97yo vines, hand-picked, destemmed, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 12 days on skins, matured in French oak (20-30% new) for 20 months. What a treasure trove the McLaren Vale has with vines/grapes/wines coming from ancient vines that signal all is well. The strength of the message is so powerful and clear you wonder why the Scarce Earth programme occupies such effort and time, unfairly taking attention away from the glory of wines such as this. Drink by 2049.
