In 2002 we tasted the inaugural 2001 vintage release of “Mr.Riggs” Shiraz, which we described as "destined to become a new cult wine". In a relatively short time, this wine has earned an enviable reputation with some vintages selling out within weeks. The 2012 vintage was an outstanding one in McLaren Vale and the release of this wine has been keenly anticipated by wine lovers. We can assure you the wait has been worth it – this is a spectacular result and very worthy follow up to the 2010. The 2012 Mr. Riggs Shiraz is a blend of five great McLaren Vale Shiraz vineyards; Gateway, Piebald Gully, Monapilla Vineyard, Duckchase and Bradens. The vineyards are owned/managed by five of the best-known McLaren Vale growers, namely Ben Riggs (Piebald Gully), Paxton’s (Gateway), Wright Family (Duckchase), Beal’s (Monapilla) and Joch Bosworth (Bradens). Components from all five vineyards were fermented in traditional open fermenters, and following pressing, finished their fermentation in oak of which approximately 80% was French and the balance American, 40% of which was new oak. Vineyard parcels were kept separate during fermentation and maturation with blending taking place three months prior to bottling.

An Epic McLaren Vale Shiraz

Spectacular super saturated inky black colour with a very deep dark purple black hue. The nose exhilarates the senses with heady aromas of liquorice, blackberries and dark chocolate wafting from the glass in decadent fashion overlaying a background of dark plum, vanillin oak, subtle mocha and spice. Full bodied boasting magnificent richness and concentration, yet still remarkably light on its feet the palate delivers seamlessly integrated flavours of ripe blackberries, liquorice and dark plum that explode across the mouth. Underlying characters of dark chocolate, vanillin oak and spice follow. Plush opulent texture with velvet smooth, perfectly integrated tannins. Outstanding persistence and depth finishing with an exceptionally long aftertaste of liquorice, blackberries, subtle dark chocolate, vanillin oak and spice.
Cellar 8-10 years.
