The fruit for this superb Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from two of the top growers in Coonawarra - Kym Tolley’s Penley Estate and Michael Wetherall’s Wetherall Estate. Picked on different days to allow for optimum ripening, parcels of fruit for the Mr. Riggs 2012 "Outpost" Coonawarra Cabernet were separately fermented in 7 and 8 tonne open fermenters. On skin fermentation was completed before pressings were sent to barrel for 13-17 months to complete fermentation in a 30% new American and French oak combination.

In 2012 Coonawarra experienced perfect weather conditions for ripening and continues to show why it is considered one of the great red wine producing regions of Australia.

Totally opaque black crimson red colour showing excellent saturation with deep dark crimson red black tinged hue. Aromas of ripe blackcurrant and liquorice are overlaid by some bay leaf and spearmint with some underlying spicy cedar. An excellent sniff for such a young Coonawarra Cabernet. Full bodied the palate is packed with an abundance of rich ripe blackcurrant fruit whilst still retaining a sense of Coonawarra’s trademark elegance. Flavours of mulberry, subtle bay leaf, cedar and spice follow on the back palate. Very fine grained perfectly integrated tannins. Excellent depth with long blackcurrant, mulberry, bay leaf and spicy cedar aftertaste.
