Greywacke is the new Marlborough label of former Cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd, and the fulfilment of a long held dream. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1992 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own.
As the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay where he presided over the company’s first 25 vintages, Kevin Judd has obviously learnt a thing or two about producing top notch Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. In only two vintages his label ‘Greywacke’ has emerged as one of Marlborough’s brightest stars. This wine successfully merges that classic Marlborough note that wine writers so often liken to 'gooseberries' (grape-like berries with a flavour combining lemon, lime, tropical fruit with a sort of grassy herbaceousness), with a minerality and acid structure more akin to quality Sancerre.
Bright very pale straw colour with greenish tinge around the edges and watery hue. The nose displays herbaceous grassy top notes followed by some gooseberry and citrus with a hint of spice as an end note. The palate delivers fabulous intensity and mouthfeel with concentrated flavours of herbaceous grassy gooseberry, citrus and passionfruit with a mineral infused back palate. Clean crisp finish, showing superb length with a very long aftertaste of gooseberry, passionfruit and mineral.
Drink over the next 2 years (2010-2012).
