Dr John Possingham, a research graduate of Adelaide and Oxford Universities, implemented the mechanisation of vine trellising, harvesting and pruning in Australia in the 1960's. His techniques went on to influence wine regions all over the world.
Dr Possingham also established 'Possums Vineyards' with his wife, Carol Summers in 1980. They purchased two vineyard sites in McLaren Vale – 30 ha in Willunga (on the Willunga escarpment where red loam soils sit on limestone) and 30 ha in Blewitt Springs. Existing vines on the sites were saved from the vine pull scheme and integrated into the new plantings. The 'Dr. John' range of wines was introduced in late 2010.

These are single vineyard wines hand made by Pieter Breugem, the company's South African winemaker. The aim of this project is to pick out the best batches and blocks. Pieter then puts his own stamp on the wines. The 2010 vintage was a very consistent ripening year with top notch fruit in from the Willunga vineyard, which wasn’t blown around by the gulf winds - just for a change!
A succulent McLaren Vale Shiraz that's selling for a songOpaque black crimson colour with deep dark crimson red hue. The nose displays good lift with scents of liquorice and ripe blackberry to the fore followed by some confectionary and spice. Full bodied the palate possesses a succulent lush flavour profile of liquorice and blackberry with some underlying subtle toasty vanillin oak followed by some spicy blackpepper characters on the back palate. Velvet smooth tannins create a fleshy mouthfeel. Excellent length with long liquorice, ripe blackberry, toasty vanillin oak and blackpepper aftertaste.
Cellar 4-5 years (2016-2017).
Alc 14.5%
