Both now and in the past, Sancerre has been considered the Loire Valley’s premiere appellation. In the pre-phylloxera era (before 1850), it provided Pinot Noir for Champagne production. Demand from the northern neighbors was testament to the quality of the vineyards. Post phylloxera, Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre took its place as one of the classic varietals on the world stage (aided, some say, by the ease with which English speakers could pronounce 'Sancerre', as opposed to other French appellations).
Brilliant pale straw colour with watery hue. The nose displays good intensity with zesty aromas of grassy herbaceous citrus followed by some herbs, gooseberry and mineral. The palate is quite flavoursome with intense unripe gooseberry and lemon flavours followed by some herbaceous characters and a clean crisp dry mineral infused finish. Long aftertaste of citrus, gooseberry and flinty mineral.
Drink over the next 2-3 years (2011-2014)
