Many Merlots from warmer regions such as McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley can tend to be very ripe and plummy, lacking some of the 'noble' characteristics that the variety is capable of delivering. From the outstanding 2009 vintage Ben Riggs has crafted a superb Merlot that manages to achieve a perfect balancing act between refinement and richness, blending 'Old World' with 'New'.

One of the most impressive McLaren Vale Merlots that we’ve tasted, possessing an ‘X’ factor that makes it a must try.

Sourced from the Penny’s Hill Malpas vineyard planted in 1991 the wine was matured in a combination of new and two-year old French oak barrels for approximately 13 months. Opaque dark crimson red purple colour with deep crimson red hue. The nose displays perfumed aromas of mulberry, cedar and spice displaying great refinement. Medium to full bodied displaying excellent length and concentration with flavours of blackcurrant, ripe mulberry and cedar followed by a spicy back palate. Super fine grained tannins, perfectly balanced. Very long aftertaste of mulberry, blackcurrant and spice.
