Benchmarks of precision.

Sancerre is recognized internationally as a benchmark for Sauvignon Blanc and it is on the region's clay/ limestone and siliceous slopes that the grape gives the finest expression. These vineyards can be seen as "benchmarks of precision", expressing elusive, layered qualities often lacking in the current crop of New Zealand 'Sauvies'. Although it is the appellations only white varietal, (as is effectively the case in New Zealand, given the enormous proportion of production) the wines of Sancerre also offer a variety of styles, (something sadly lacking in the majority of New World 'Sauvy' regions) superbly reflected by these two top cuvees from Jean Max Roger. The Roger family have practised their trade in and around village of Bué since the early 17th century. Jean-Max Roger took the reins in the early 1970s and expanded the estate's Sancerre holdings from 4 hectares to its current 26. Beginning in 2004, two of his three sons, Etienne and Thibault, came back to work at the estate, ensuring this fine maker continues as a passionate, quality focused, family business. The family's vineyards within the Sancerre appellation are located in the communes of Bué, Sancerre, and the hamlets of Amigny, Crézancy and Vinon. These plantings include three of the most famous vineyards - Le Grand Chemarin, Le Chêne Marchand and La Poussie - made up of “caillottes” (small calcified stones) “terres blanches” (maritime lime and clay soils like those found in Chablis) and some "griottes" (softer calcified stones).

The “C.M." cuvée is made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes grown predominantly in Chene Marchand, with smaller parcels from La Cote and La Poussie. The varying types of soil: “Caillottes” and “Kimmeridgian Marls” combine terroirs to contribute both complexity and finesse to this cuvée. The “caillottes” give the wine its floral and fruity notes, along with its lightness and freshness while the “terres blanches” provide structure, richness and power. "Cuvée G.C." is made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes harvested predominantly in “Le Grand Chemarin", with some material from neighbouring terroirs with similar characteristics. These stoney, clay-limestone based soils known as "caillottes" cover steep slopes that enjoy southerly to south-eastern exposures. Wines from these areas are elegant, lifted and show great finesse. Bright pale straw colour with watery hue. The nose displays aromas of citrus, lime and green apple followed by some minerally end notes. Slightly fresher and with more lively acidity than the Cuvee C.M. the palate delivers flavours of citrus, some herbaceous gooseberry and a touch of lime with a clean crisp slatey finish. Aftertaste of herbaceous gooseberry and slatey mineral.
