"2009 in Heathcote demonstrates when mother nature is firm but fair, and you get it right in the vineyard, it's all worth it", says proprietor and winemaker Rob Peebles. He is justifiably proud of this wine, describing it as a Zin with "stacks of personality".

Nicely done! Quality Zinfandel has few exponents in Australia and this is a credit to Peeble's persistence with a variety that's more trouble than what it's worth for many viticulturalists.

The vintage was warm and dry – in fact Buckshot received no rain in the months of January and February, and as a result, 2009 was their lowest cropping year - fewer bunches, smaller bunches and small dark berries resulted in excellent flavour concentration. While “Zin” is not easy to grow, it enjoys Heathcote’s dry climate and cool nights. Buckshot refer to it as the “Square Peg” because it's planted in a plot that's dominated by Shiraz and requires very different viticultural and winemaking techniques.

The wine pours a very deep dark crimson red colour with deep crimson red hue. Aromas of black cherries and black plum followed by some liquorice and spice. Medium to full bodied the palate is where this wine really excels delivering an explosive flavour profile of dark cherries, plum, liquorice, vanilla and spice. Superb depth. Fine grained tannins with long aftertaste of black cherries, black plums, liquorice and spice.
