The de Vogue village-level 2008 Chambolle-Musigny having just been bottled when I tasted there in February, the domaine declined to serve it and I did not get another opportunity, but the corresponding 2008 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru – featuring younger vines in Musigny, and tasted assembled, prior to bottling – is a beauty. Iris, peony, rose, hyssop, nutmeg, ripe red berries, and ocean spray in the nose persist as inner-mouth perfume and fruit profusion allied to a subtly creamy texture. I am willing to grant Millet some sense of syrup to the fruit’s sheer sweetness, but at the same time it is charged with illuminating – not to mention also vintage-typical – energy and acidity. Suggestions of raw red meat and forest floor add to the complexity of maritime minerality and purity of fruit in a finish approaching grand cru length. I would expect this to be well worth savoring over a dozen or more years.
