The high point of Ben Riggs' Journeys End Shiraz Collection, differentiated by the use of only the best barrels, longer barrel maturation times and fruit from lower cropping vines. The label is of particular interest in that it celebrates a turning point in Australia's early wine history. James Busby left Australia for a European tour in 1831 and is generally considered to be the first to return with Shiraz vines.
Opaque black core with a deep brick red hue. Intense liquorice and blackberry aromas intermix with hints of scented plum, vanillin oak, subtle earthy leather notes and spice. Rich, soft and fleshy, mouthfilling flavours of blackberries, liquorice and plums glide across the palate like liquid silk underscored by hints of stewed fruit, earthy vanillin oak, leather and spice. Velvet smooth tannins are largely undiscernible. Excellent power finishing with a lengthy aftertaste of dark plums, liquorice, some emerging stewed fruits, earthy leather and spicy vanillin oak. Rich and silky with some complexing tertiary nuances adding interest, this is primed for drinking now.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.
First Tasted May 2011: Totally opaque black crimson colour with deep dark crimson red hue. The nose delivers intense aromas of liquorice, mocha, dark plum, dark chocolate and vanillin confectionary – a superb complex aromatic profile. Boasting great opulence and richness as well as concentration the palate displays mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum, mocha, a touch of vanilla and spice. Silky smooth mouthfeel and tannin structure. Very long persistent aftertaste of ripe blackberry, liquorice, vanilla and spice. An outstanding result from what is generally considered a more challenging vintage than the past 4-5 years.
Drink now or cellar up to 5-6 years (2011-2017).
