Marsanne, Rousanne and Viognier form the classic Rhone Valley white trio. The origins of Viognier can be traced back to Roman times, whereas those of Marsanne and Rousanne are less certain. James Busby is credited with having introduced Marsanne and Rousanne to Australia in 1832 together with Shiraz. The “Rhone Ranger” wine makers of Australia and California have used the three grape varieties to create a complex wine style. The Viognier grape, contributes the strong aromatics, with notes of peaches and apricots, but has low acidity. The Marsanne produces pronounced flavours of spice and honeycomb which when combined with the rich texture of Rousanne creates a wine with added honey and lemon zest flavours.
This impressive Black Chook is made from a blend of 68% Viognier, 16% Marsanne and 16% Roussanne. Bright straw colour with water like hue. Complex nose – showing the virtues of cross blending. Ripe tropical fruit, spice and ripe pear top note. Generous mouthfeel, honeycomb, ripe pear and tropical fruit are supported by a touch of citrus on the back palate, followed by a hint of mandarin. Clean finish.
