Wine critics have hailed New Zealand as the world’s best producer of Sauvignon Blanc, and it has to do with a highly concentrated chemical compound, Methoxypyrazine. This chemical compound is extremely pungent, and can easily become overpowering to the point of being unpleasant. One taster of unripe Sauvignon Blanc described the character as tasting like ”...green tomatoes that have been stewed with their leaves left on”. Others have described the varietal as “cat’s pee”. Nevertheless, the variety has become Australia’s most popular white wine. Why so?
New Zealand is particularly well suited to Sauvignon Blanc, especially around the Marlborough area, where the synergy of climate, very cool temperatures and intense sunlight coupled with meagre rainfall, produce the ideal terroir combination. Yet Adelaide Hills, Margaret River, Yarra Valley and Tasmania are also contenders in the Sauvignon Blanc quality stakes. The success of Sauvignon Blanc is largely due to its fresh intense aromatics. In its greenest form the nose and flavours take on the characteristics of grass, asparagus and capsicum. Slightly riper fruit delivers intense flavours of ripe gooseberry, passionfruit and tropical fruit. The flavours are enhanced by a crisp acid backbone making it an ideal aperitif wine. It would seem impossible to have a party without Sauvignon Blanc. The 2006 Blicks Lane Sauvignon Blanc is a wonderful expression of what Marlborough does best and a perfect wine for the long Summer days ahead.
This outstanding Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc offers exceptional value for money.
The vineyard was established ten years ago by brothers Clyde & Nigel Sowman who have adopted a no compromises approach to winemaking. Bright pale straw colour with water like hue. Intense nose of ripe gooseberry followed by spice, tropical fruit and just a touch of mango. The palate has a touch of creaminess evident. Very good length. Flavours of mango, tropical fruit and gooseberry. A fuller style of Sauvignon Blanc. Aftertaste of ripe gooseberry and tropical fruit.
