Australian Shiraz Viognier blends have burst onto the scene in recent years, the co-fermenting of a small percentage of Viognier with Shiraz resulting in wines with a WOW factor and immediate drinking pleasure. Combined with the power and richness of Shiraz the Viognier component’s exotic character adds complexity on the nose and palate giving the wine a supple voluptuous texture. Ben Riggs Zonte’s Footstep and Black Chook blends being two classic examples of this hedonistic combination.

Zonte’s Footstep is partnership between Vigneron John Pargeter, Viticulurist Geoff Hardy, Winemaker Ben Riggs and marketing guru Zar Brooks. The footstep on the label is that of a Diprotodon (giant wombat) which inhabited the region some 10-20,000 years ago.

This is yet another very successful blend from master winemaker Ben Riggs – made from 93% Shiraz and 7% Viognier. Lifted nose, with dried apricot top notes, followed by blackberry and spice. Joosy palate structure with flavours of ripe plum, spice and liquorice, over a dried apricot background. Velvet smooth tannins. Very long aftertaste of plum, dried apricots, spice and liquorice. An excellent follow up to the hugely successful 2004 release.
