Spy Valley is a colloquial name for Marlborough’s Waihopai Valley, derived from the presence of a satellite communications monitoring base. Fertile, free draining, stoney soils result from successive floods and glacial outwash deposits over the previous 10,000 years.

Eight varieties are grown over 360 acres. Pinot Noir fruit was selected from four separate blocks within the vineyard. The grapes were hand picked and gently crushed into 5 tonne fermenters. After a short period of cold soaking, the ferments start naturally utilizing wild yeasts. Once the fermentation is complete, the wine is pressed off skins and allowed to age for 12 months in oak.

An outstanding Pinot – showing splendid black purple colour – almost Shiraz like in its opacity. Medium body. Top note of black cherry, followed by plum and anise followed by a hint of spice and violets. The palate flavours are mouthfilling – generous weight, with flavours of plum, black cherry and anise evident over a very peppery back palate. Fine grained tannins, with impressive power wave. Very long aftertaste of black pepper, cherry and spice.
