The name for this wine ‘McRae Wood’ is derived from the fact that in 1964 Jim Barry purchased 70 acres of prime land from Duncan McRae Wood. It was on this land that Jim Barry planted his first vineyard with Shiraz. The 2005 vintage was considered to be an outstanding year in the Clare Valley. The season produced near perfect growing conditions. Spring was warm, but the maximum temperatures over January and February were slightly cooler than usual and there were useful falls of rain that kept vines looking healthy. The wine was matured for 15 months in a combination of two thirds New American oak and one third 1-year-old American oak.

Totally opaque black purple colour with black purple hue. Top note of vanilla, followed by lifted violet, blackberry and liquorice allsorts end notes. The palate delivers what the nose promises – mouthfilling flavours of blackberry, vanilla and spice over a layer of liquorice and cedar. Velvet tannin structure. Excellent length and depth.Long aftertaste of vanilla and cedar.
