New Zealand has built a formidable reputation around Sauvignon Blanc and more recently Pinot Noir from Central Otago and Martinborough. Chardonnay has been consistent and varietals such as Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewurztraminer have been made with great success. The Cabernet family is less reliable and like Cabernet from the Mornington Peninsula is very much site specific. There have certainly been a number of impressive Cabernets – the Craggy Range Merlot Cabernet blend is expensive and impressive.

Medium body. Deep crimson colour and crimson mauve purple hue. Top note of mulberry and spice, followed by raspberry and a hint of earth and truffle, showing good varietal characters. The palate has weight and elegance. Flavours of mulberry and spice are dominant, followed by dark cherry and cedar. Excellent balance. Aftertaste of truffle, mulberry, spice and cherry.
