Generally the grapes for Octavius are sourced from both Eden and Barossa Valleys. Only Barossa Valley fruit was used for the 2004 Vintage. The vines are between 70 and 100 years old, with very low yields of around 2 to 5 tonnes per hectare. One of the distinctive hallmarks of Octavius is the use of Yalumba coopered 90 litre American oak octaves which make up for 22% of the blend, with the balance of the wine being matured in American, Hungarian and French hogsheads.

A magnificent Octavius.

Totally opaque black purple colour with black purple hue, showing excellent cling. Superb top notes of violets, blackberry, toasted oak and vanilla. The palate echoes the nose and delivers an explosive mouthfilling flavour profile. Vanilla, blackberry, spice and black pepper are perfectly integrated. Fine grained tannins, perfect balance. Exceptionally long aftertaste.

Other reviews...
Inky black/purple, it coats the glass with legs. It has an alluring perfume of toasty oak, plum, licorice, blueberry, bacon, blackberry, and a hint of chocolate. Voluptuous and youthful, it has intense flavors, plenty of well-concealed structure, and a 60-second finish. Cellar it for 8-10 years and drink it through 2035.
