Nick & Vic Chlebnikowski of Nicks Wine Merchants first invented the concept of marketing wines as ‘cleanskins’ in the late 1970s, selling off some remarkable wines with offers continuing well into the ‘80s.

In those days, parcels of wine came up from wineries that were under genuine financial stress - stocks had to be off-loaded to satisfy bankers. Perhaps the most prestigious selection came from Lindemans, when an entire collection of aged classic fortified & table wines came on to the market at a fraction of their normal price. By the late ’90's cleanskins began to be flogged by every man and his dog, however, more and more they were simply bulk wines that had been bottled off for marketing purposes (perhaps as a kind of inverted snobbery). In today's cleanskin market, while it’s true there remains the odd bargain or two, when you average the deals out, you only really get what you pay for and sometimes a lot less. With the global financial crisis effecting all economies and with Australian wine exports down, a number of high quality wines have become available as 'distressed stock' and are being sold off as cleanskins. Nicks Wine Merchants have checked the provenence of these wines, which cannot be revealed to the press, or published, however let us say you’ll know the answer as soon as you remove the cork (they're still branded!). Tasting notes: Regardless of the variety, Australian wines are invariably measured against benchmarks, usually based on ‘old world’ wine styles. However, there is one style of wine where the French missed their chance, and even though Australia pinched the idea from them, the difference is that Australia got it right. Our distinctive sparkling reds are a sheer delight. In the 1970’s, examples like ‘Cold Duck’ had a reputation as the favourite of ladies of ‘easy virtue’ (and also of girls who were inclined to wish that their own virtue was not quite so difficult). Since then, Australian winemaker’s passion for the style has evolved into a more serious affair. This is a classic example at a price that will make for affordable, everyday romance. The wine pours well with excellent mousse, fine delicate bead with moderate persistance. Delightful aroma of liquorice, plum pudding and spice. Generous palate weight and mouthfeel with creamy texture. Flavours of very spicy plum,liquorice and black pepper. Clean finish. Aftertaste of spice, black pepper, Christmas pudding and liquorice allsorts. Try pairing this wine with slightly spicy foods (a good Indian curry for example).
