During our travels around Australian vineyards one can not but help to notice the correlation between quality of fruit produced and finished wine. It all sounds so obvious, yet many growers persist in overcropping which results in light wines. Without quality fruit, the winemaker has no hope of producing a great wine.
The Verdelho grape originates from the Island of Madeira in Portugal, where it was made into generous fortified wines. The variety in Australia responds well in warmer regions, producing a full bodied white – a great alternative from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Brilliant pale straw colour. The nose is lifted with distinctive varietal character, in many ways not dissimilar to Sauvignon Blanc. Aroma of ripe pear, tropical fruit and lemon. The palate is full bodied with flavours of pear, tropical fruit and lemon, quite mouth filling with clean acid finish. This is a vibrant wine, suited for Summer quaffing with that next plate of fish n chips!
