In the last few decades, Springbank's small batch policy has resulted in one thrilling bottling after another. On the downside are small outturns, which usually means these don't last long on the shelves. 1997 saw the first distillation of Hazelburn which is triple distilled and made from entirely unpeated, air dried barley. The initial release as an eight year old in 2005 was so successful that all 6,000 bottles sold out within a matter of weeks.

This 2004 edition is already sold out in the UK. Described as delightfully full, rich and creamy with hints of exotic sweet meats." it was matured in Oloroso Sherry casks and bottled at 47.4%. Though technically unpeated, we often detect a thread of smoke in Hazelburn bottlings. It's reportedly passed through the stills after the heavily peated Longrow run, so this could explain the residual effect.

Notes from the producer… Nose: Initially raisins, marzipan, Demerara sugar followed by treacle, sticky toffee and wood shavings. Palate: Homemade strawberry jam, sugary and filled with cream, orange zest, brandy snaps and a white chocolate creme brûlée. Finish: Chocolate orange, creamy coffee liqueur, buttered popcorn, cocoa beans and mocha coffee with a delicate finish of sweet orange marmalade. 47.4% Alc./Vol.
