Historically the North East of Victoria built its reputation on ‘big reds’ and fortified wines, but got sidelined with the resurgence of cool climate winemaking. Today, led by Andrew Sutherland Smith, these vinous monuments are again highly sought after. The very dry summer of 2003 produced intensely coloured wine. Opaque black purple colour with deep black purple hue. Aroma of dark chocolate, blackberry, vanilla, plum and spice. The palate is generous, with flavours of toasted oak, followed by vanilla, confectionary, blackberry and spice. Fine grained tannins, excellent balance. Very long aftertaste of spice, black pepper, vanilla and confectionary, with the black pepper component persisting onto the aftertaste.
