TONY PARKINSON (that’s him wearing the Father Christmas hat wondering what Santa will bring this year) has guided Penny’s Hill to be one of Australia’s serious small wine companies. His Ingelburne Vineyard in McLaren Vale is a show piece, and has recently opened a top but affordable restaurant adjacent to the tasting rooms. The country atmosphere is complete with a number of chickens freely wondering around the tables of diners – we suspect Tony was fattening them up for the Christmas table to enjoy with his Specialized Red.

This is another impressive wine from Penny’s Hill. Very deep, almost opaque, black crimson colour with deep crimson hue. The nose is appealing, with aroma of vanilla, spice, blackcurrant, liquorice and violets emerging. Excellent palate weight, with classic ‘joosy’ McLaren Vale fruit flavours of, ripe plum, stewed fruit, spice and liquorice allsorts. Fine grained tannins. Excellent balance, with aftertaste of stewed plum, spice and liquorice allsorts.
