This wine has shown better on the second tasting. Bright crimson brick red colour with brick red hue. Medium body. Aroma of spice, liquorice allsorts, vanilla, chocolate and stewed fruit. The palate flavours are generous with vanilla, spice, plum and stewed fruit evident. Fine grained tannins. Long aftertaste of vanilla, spice, plum and dark chocolate.
Cellar 2-3 years (2008-2009)
First tasted, October 2005:
Deep crimson colour with crimson hue. Medium body. The nose is delicately perfumed with lifted notes of vanilla, plum and confectionary. Flavours of spice, liquorice and stewed fruit emerge on the palate. Fine grained tannins. Back palate flavours of confectionary with hints of chocolate. Plum, spice aftertaste.
Cellar 1-2 years (2006-2007)
One of Australia’s most traditional winemakers, Colin Kay fashions old style, high quality, distinctive Australian reds. Tarry, chewy, and fleshy, the 2003 Shiraz Hillside has a bit more punch (15% alcohol) as well as a sappy character that is not present in the regular bottling. It is a broad, savory, expansively flavored, full-bodied Shiraz to enjoy over the next decade.
Robert Parker – The Wine Advocate # 161 (Oct 2005)
Good colour; soft, round and rich; gentle plum, mocha and vanilla; everything moulded by 2 years in oak. Shares the ultimate retro-style label with Block 6.
