Wither Hills was one of the pioneers of the world famous Marlborough region. John Marris first planted vines in 1978 and today his son Brent Marris is winemaker. Wither Hills has its Sauvignon Blanc plantings on an array of soil types and their winemaking philosophy is very much hands off, letting the vineyard sites express themselves. For the 2002 vintage a heavier than expected crop was harvested, but fortunately due to vine balance and the extended growing season allowing ‘hangtime’, there was no dilution of fruit flavours. Approximately 30 odd fermentation batches were blended in order to maximise complexity and flavour for the 2002 Sauvignon Blanc.
Tasting Note: An outstanding Sauvignon Blanc. Fresh aromatic nose with top notes of ripe gooseberry, tropical fruit and ripe passionfruit. The palate is mouthfilling, showing excellent length and freshness. Layers of ripe gooseberry, passionfruit and spice fill the palate. Perfect balance, crisp acidity, with very long aftertaste of ripe gooseberry and tropical fruit.
Cellar 1-2 years (2004-2005)
