In 1844 William Salter arrived in the Barossa and built the historic Mamre Brook house before making his first wines at Saltram in 1859. The Barossa range of wines from Saltram pays tribute to this great Australian region-from the gnarled old vineyards on the warm, dry valley floor to the cooler crisp fruit grown in the surrounding hills- the Barossa is complex, full of variety andwonderfully unique.

The 2002 vintage was warm with perfect ripening conditions resulting in colourful berries with concentrated varietal flavour. Fruit for this wine was sourced entirely from the Barossa, located about an hour’s drive north of Adelaide.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot fruit was crushed and vinified separately before final blending to create the 2002 Saltram Barossa Cabernet Merlot. Fermentation in modern stainless steel tanks has ensured the fresh varietal fruit flavours and colour from the skins has been retained. This was followed by malolactic fermentation to further soften the palate. The wine was then racked into seasoned American and French oak barrels for maturation.

Tasting Note: Intense aromas of plum and red berries with a hint of pepper, spice and oak are present on the nose. These scents develop into fruit characters on the palate and are given generous complexity by well integrated oak and soft tannins.
