Redesdale Estate is owned by Peter Williams and his wife Suzanne Arwall, who purchased the 25 hectare property in 1988. The vines were first planted in 1982 on north east slopes, partly fronting the Campaspie River. The soils are composed of lean rocky quartz and granite, making the vines struggle to survive. Two varieties are grown, Shiraz and Cabernets, with the wines being made by Tobias Ansted, from Balgownie Estate.
The 2002 Redesdale Estate Shiraz is impressive and clearly demonstrates that with the right viticultural management great Shiraz can be made off the Cambrian earth. Totally opaque crimson colour with deep crimson hue. The nose is superb, with top notes of violets, followed by blackberry, spice, vanilla and dark chocolate. The palate has excellent weight, with flavours of blackberry, toast, violets and ripe plum, followed by a distinctive black pepper back palate. Fine grained, dry tannins, perfectly balanced. Very long aftertaste of spice, plum, blackberry and black pepper.
Cellar 4-5 years (2009-2010)
Alc/Vol: 15.0%
