- Closure: Cork
These old vines were planted in the early 1940’s by George Cox, and left to grow as bush vines. By the time Rino and Greta Ozella purchased the property in 1983 the vines had become badly neglected and so began the restoration process. A new family home was built on the property, the old vines Grenache reinvigorated, and from then plantings were made – 4.5 acres of Shiraz in 1996 and a further 1.5 acres planted in 1999. The vineyard has a westerly slope facing the sea receiving long afternoon sun hours and sea breezes. The soils are composed of light, loamy soils with limestone ridges. The currently released wines have been made by Michael Brown at the Kangarilla Road winery. The Kangarilla style is quite evident in the wines.
Very deep crimson colour with purple mauve hue. The nose displays aroma of liquorice, spice, raspberry and cherry being more restrained than expected, however, the palate more than makes up for any restraint from the nose. Mouth filling flavours over a velvet smooth texture, the palate weight is very much Classic McLaren Vale, with a generous body and flavours of liquorice, raspberry and plum followed by a blackpepper aftertaste. Very long aftertaste of raspberry, cherry, spice and confectionary.
