2001 Red Edge Heathcote Shiraz
Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Aroma of spice and spearmint followed by a hint of leather. The palate shows flavours of stewed fruit, with a hint of sour cherry. Fine dry tannins which persist long into the aftertaste. Plum spice aftertaste.
Cellar 3-4 years (2006-2007)
Alc/Vol: 14.5%
Robert Parkers Review
From low yielding (1 to 1.5 tons of fruit per acre), 30-year old vines, Red Edge’s peppery, minty 2001 Shiraz possesses an opaque blue/purple color as well as abundant aromatics. However, in the mouth, it is a bit “edgy.” The mint character as well as astringent tannin and a hint of disjointedness make this a controversial offering. While there is great fruit on the persistent attack, an outstanding, medium to full-bodied personality, and a deep, textured mouthfeel, there are also some rough edges to be resolved. This 2001 is probably best forgotten for 1-2 years, after which everything will, hopefully, be better integrated.
