H.P.R. PINOT BELOW COST! Winemaker Hugh Robinson is a Burgundy fanatic. In 1988, his obsession got the better of him, and he set about planting a vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula with D5V12 Pinot Clones, and subsequently followed it up with a further planting of MV6 clones, together with Burgundy clones 114 and 115. Burgundian wine making techniques were employed and crop levels were restricted to just over 1.5 tonnes to the acre. The first two wines we saw from HPR Estate, the 1999 & 2000 were both fantastic examples of Pinot Noir, however, for one reason or another Hugh has decided he’s had enough and is getting out of the industry. Perhaps it was the pruning of vines in the middle of a cold winter, or perhaps he couldn’t make enough money to keep his amazing Burgundy collection going?!

Whatever the case may be, the end result is that the consumer is the winner – BOTH THE 2001 & 2002 VINTAGES ARE BEING CLEARED OUT AT CLOSE TO HALF THEIR NORMAL RETAIL PRICE. BUT YOU’LL NEED TO BE QUICK - PINOT NOIR THIS GOOD DOESN’T COME AROUND TOO OFTEN AT THESE PRICES!

Tasting Note:
This wine has blossomed considerably since we last tasted it in August 2003. The nose and palate have gained complexity and length. Translucent brick red colour with brick red hue. Lifted nose, showing distinct varietal character. Aroma of strawberry and cherry jam, followed by a touch of spice and toasted oak. The palate has developed an excellent power wave, with spice and strawberry flavours being dominant and enhanced by some toasted oak. Velvet smooth tannins, with very long, persistent spice and strawberry aftertaste.
Cellar 3-4 years (2008-2009)
Alc/Vol: 14.2%

First Tasted August 2003:
Translucent crimson colour with mauve hue. The nose displays good lift with aroma of spice, black cherry and just a hint of anise. The palate has good weight, with spice and plum flavours over a cherry background. Moderate length, fine grained tannins followed by a spice and cherry aftertaste.
Cellar 2-3 years (2005-2006)
