Producer note: Christian Gouges noted that August 2001 was perfect but that September presented a number of challenges, resulting in grapes that had 'correct' but not exceptional maturity. He noted that sugars came in between 11 and 12% with yields in the 35 to 38 hl/ha range, which was a bit less than in 2000. 'We had almost no rot and good phenolic ripeness; we also did a big green harvest but thankfully, not much sorting was required at the harvest'. Gouges describes 2001 as 'more classic and less flattering than 2000 with much more prominent tannins'. The mise is presently predicted for March, without fining or filtration.

Tasting note: There is already the barest hint of secondary aromas blending in with the earthy, rich and nicely complex earthy pinot fruit that gives way to bright and sweet, firmly structured flavors that explode on the finish. This will require patience.

Lovely cherry, mineral and earth notes up front, with astringent tannins taking over and lending a dry finish today. There's better balance overall here, just needing time to integrate. The sweet fruit returns on the finish. Best from 2006 through 2012.
