Henry Best established the Concongella Vineyard in 1866. Within the original 1800’s nursery block, there is a row of vines that Henry Best named Pinot Dru in his journal – the vines have been identified as Cabernet Sauvignon. The original block consists of 13 acres of vines, additional plantings of Cabernet and Merlot took place in 1980 and 1982. Today, it is Viv Thompson and his family that run the vineyards, with eldest son Ben now in charge. The standards for the Great Western label are high – “Top of the league, no vine is picked until its grown enough to be mature, no grape used unless it’s in peak condition, no parcel of wine is considered unless it lives up to the winemakers exacting standards.”

A refined Cabernet showing classic varietal character and style.

Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Perfumed nose of violets, spice and cedar. The palate has superb Cabernet structure – showing excellent length and depth. Flavours of spice, cedar and blackcurrant emerge followed by a truffle back palate. Fine grained tannins, verging on being velvet soft. Very long aftertaste of spice, violets, blackcurrant and cedar.
