2000 Smiths Angaston 11 Year Old Port Wood Finish Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (700ml)

Finished for 14 months in a 90 litre American oak cask octave that had previously held Touriga tawny dessert wine (port). Brilliant brassy / copper appearance. A gentle nose prickle is accompanied by aromas of dried coconut, cinnamon and stewed apple. After five minutes aeration, the profile becomes distinctively fruit and nut chocolate-like with a touch of rancio evident. Entry is appealingly spicy, building into a bitter sweet powerhouse of spices and cocoa that's followed by sweeter notes of dried berries and prune offering a momentary flash of real tawny port character. Fantastic balance. Finish sees the fruit and nut chocolate notes return with caramel lingering long into the aftertaste. Port finishes seem to be the most variable in the genre.
