Elderton are now featuring prominently the fact that the Command originates from a single vineyard. The importance of this from a marketing perspective needs to be understood since many of Australia’s icon brands are being sourced from a variety of regional and interregional vineyards. Exponents of the terroir concept, accept the notion of vintage variation, and indeed regard with some excitement the fact that no two years are the same. By multi sourcing fruit from different regions, either within a state or from interstate, some wine companies (mainly the larger producers) have opted for a more consistent wine being produced year-in year-out, thus ‘smoothing out’ some of the influence of terroir. This wine has been matured for 3 years in both French and American oak, this has had the benefit of adding a more complexing dimension to the wine than it might have otherwise had with less barrel age.

Opaque black crimson colour with black crimson hue. The nose is superb and will not disappoint. Perfumed notes of violets, confectionary, spice, cedar and vanilla followed by liquorice and very ripe plum. The palate is mouthfilling, with flavours of very ripe plum to the fore, meshed with black pepper, vanilla, dark chocolate and spice. Velvet smooth tannins followed by very long aftertaste of vanilla, dark chocolate and black pepper. This is an excellent example of a big, full bodied Barossa red.

Notes sourced from Wine Spectator
Elderton’s flagship wine has in the past come off as simply overwhelming. This has grace, harmony and refinement, without losing an ounce of power. Still, it’s big and rich, brimming with tarry, spicy black cherry, dark plum, blackberry and chocolate flavors. Rich and gooey like a warm flourless chocolate cake, yet it finds a plush balance that keeps it from veering off into heaviness.
